Mumbai, Sept 2026 : The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licences of 13 food establishments in Mumbai after inspections uncovered serious food safety and hygiene violations, including at the iconic 122-year-old Irani restaurant Kyani & Co.
The action was taken during a special festive-season enforcement drive conducted across Maharashtra from September 23 to 27. The campaign resulted in the suspension of 30 food licences statewide, including 13 in Mumbai, six in the Konkan division, eight in the Pune division and three in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division.
According to FDA officials, an inspection of Kyani & Co at Dhobi Talao on Sunday revealed several hygiene lapses in the restaurant's food preparation and storage areas. Officials reportedly found cats, rat droppings, live flies and dead cockroaches on the premises.
Inspectors also found a large quantity of blood accumulated inside a refrigerator and an open sewage manhole located in the food processing area, raising concerns over compliance with prescribed food safety standards.
The Mumbai crackdown also covered prominent establishments. The licences of upscale Cantonese restaurant Royal China and a Subway outlet at Phoenix Mills were among those suspended by the FDA.
The department said the action formed part of its continuing efforts to ensure food safety and hygiene standards at restaurants and other food establishments across Maharashtra, particularly during the festive season when food businesses witness increased activity and footfall.
The FDA's inspections are aimed at identifying violations and taking regulatory action against establishments found compromising prescribed safety and sanitation norms.
