German Chancellor vows to remain in office and pursue reforms after CDU suffers historic setback in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and loses Berlin vote to Die Linke
Berlin, September 2026 : German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has begun the new week under intensified political pressure after his centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) suffered major defeats in two state elections, losing ground to the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and to the left-wing Die Linke in Berlin.
The results have deepened questions over Merz's political standing only 16 months after he took office. The CDU's poor performance comes after a series of electoral setbacks and declining public support, while the AfD has continued to strengthen its position in national and regional polls.
In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the AfD emerged as the largest party with around 38.3% of the vote, narrowly ahead of the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), which secured about 35.4%. The CDU's support fell to 4.9%, taking it below the 5% threshold required to enter the state parliament. The result represented the CDU's worst performance in a German state election since 1949.
Although the AfD finished first, it is unlikely to form the state government because other major parties have ruled out cooperation with it. The SPD, led by state Premier Manuela Schwesig, is expected to remain central to coalition negotiations.
Berlin produced another setback for Merz's party. Die Linke won around 25.3% of the vote, ahead of the CDU at approximately 19-20%, while the AfD secured about 16%. The result ended the CDU's position as the leading party in the capital and highlighted the gains being made by both parties at opposite ends of Germany's political spectrum.
The defeats prompted Merz to make an unusually early television appearance on Sunday evening, shortly after the first exit polls were released. He acknowledged that the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania result was a “disaster” but made clear that he intended to remain CDU chairman and continue serving as chancellor.
“What needs to be done now requires backbone, steadfastness and patience,” Merz said, arguing that the electoral setbacks should not lead his government to abandon its reform programme.
Merz also warned that confidence in Germany's institutions was being weakened and said political forces on both the left and right were contributing to the problem. He argued that Germany's economic and political challenges required continued action rather than a retreat from difficult reforms.
Leadership Questions Intensify
The chancellor's rapid response was widely interpreted by political analysts as an attempt to establish control over the political narrative before internal criticism could intensify.
The latest defeats have revived speculation that members of the CDU/CSU conservative bloc could eventually seek a change in leadership. Among the names previously discussed as possible alternatives are North Rhine-Westphalia Premier Hendrik Wüst and Bavaria's Premier and CSU leader Markus Söder.
However, neither politician has publicly launched a challenge to Merz. Senior conservative figures have instead stressed the importance of party unity and political stability.
Eight CDU state premiers publicly backed Merz last week, saying Germany needed stability and that the party should focus on political action rather than internal personnel debates.
The support came after the CDU suffered another major setback in Saxony-Anhalt earlier this month, where the AfD recorded a historic victory and came close to securing an outright majority. That result had already triggered questions over Merz's leadership and the CDU's strategy for confronting the AfD.
Reform Agenda Under Pressure
Merz entered the chancellorship in May 2025 promising to revive Germany's struggling economy, strengthen the country's defence capabilities and reduce irregular migration. His government, formed with the centre-left SPD, has also sought to advance reforms involving pensions, taxation, healthcare and deregulation.
Progress on several measures has proved difficult, however, as the coalition has faced disagreements over economic and social policy. Rising living costs and dissatisfaction with government performance have added to the political pressure.
The AfD's continuing electoral gains have made the situation more complicated for the CDU, particularly in eastern Germany. Its success has increased pressure on mainstream parties to address concerns over migration, economic conditions and public services while maintaining their existing political positions.
Merz has also faced criticism over his communication style and government policies, while recent polling has shown weak satisfaction with his performance. The latest state elections have consequently become more than local contests, with their results being viewed as a measure of the federal government's political standing.
A Difficult Week Ahead
Following the elections, Merz convened the CDU leadership for a crisis meeting and cleared much of his schedule to deal with the political fallout. He also cancelled a planned trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, choosing instead to remain in Germany as his party assesses the consequences of the defeats.
For now, Merz has rejected calls to step aside and has pledged to continue governing. The immediate challenge is to maintain support within the CDU/CSU, keep his coalition functioning and demonstrate progress on his reform agenda.
The twin election defeats have nevertheless exposed the growing pressure on Germany's traditional political centre, with voters in different regions shifting towards parties on both the right and left. For Merz, the coming weeks will test his ability to respond to those electoral signals while maintaining control of his government and party.
