Microsoft Announces Voluntary Exit Programme for Employees in India, US, UK and Canada

Bengaluru, Oct 2026 : Microsoft has announced a Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) for eligible employees in India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, providing financial benefits, health insurance and career transition assistance to those opting to leave the company.

The technology giant has approximately 23,000 employees in India, although the number eligible for the programme in the country has not been disclosed. Globally, around 60,000 employees are eligible for the offer.

Eligible employees in India are understood to have until December 1 to decide whether to accept the package. The offer is expected to include one month’s base salary for every completed year of service, along with health insurance and career transition services.

Microsoft Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced the initiative in a blog post. The time-limited programme will be available to eligible employees at level 70 and below in participating teams across the four countries.

Coleman said the Voluntary Exit Offer was intended to provide an option for employees considering opportunities outside Microsoft, while helping participating business units adjust their workforce in response to changing business requirements.

She clarified that the programme would not be applied uniformly across the company. Eligibility and participation would depend on individual business priorities, customer commitments and workforce needs. Employees who qualify will receive emails outlining the specific terms of their offers.

“The Voluntary Exit Offer is new for us. We'll learn from it,” Coleman said.

She added that Microsoft would continue helping employees acquire new skills and explore internal career opportunities wherever appropriate. The company would take into account the requirements of individual teams as well as the circumstances and career aspirations of employees.

The announcement comes as technology companies continue adapting their workforce requirements to evolving business priorities and the growing importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing.

Microsoft Reaffirms India Investment Commitment

Meanwhile, a Microsoft spokesperson reiterated the company’s commitment to investing in India’s talent pool and technology ecosystem, including supporting the country’s artificial intelligence ambitions.

Microsoft has committed USD 20.5 billion in investments between 2025 and 2029 across cloud and AI infrastructure, skilling initiatives and operations in India.

The spokesperson also said the company was on track to meet its commitment to equip 20 million people across India with AI skills by 2030.

The voluntary exit programme offers eligible employees an alternative to continuing their careers at Microsoft, while allowing participating teams to respond to changing operational needs. However, the company has not disclosed how many Indian employees are expected to qualify or how many may ultimately accept the offer.

Microsoft’s initiative combines financial assistance with career transition support, while its stated investment and skilling commitments indicate that India remains an important market for its cloud and AI expansion strategy.
