New Delhi, September 2026 : Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Tuesday targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over an alleged incident in which a Dalit woman councillor’s clothes were torn during a protest outside the Delhi Police Commissioner’s office.
Singh alleged that Delhi Police personnel tore the clothes of a Dalit woman councillor outside the Police Commissioner’s office and questioned the BJP government over the incident. Referring to the BJP’s “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” campaign, he said the incident exposed what he described as the reality of the government’s slogan.
Singh also questioned why action had allegedly not been taken against Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma in connection with the reported slapping of a young man, while FIRs had been registered against Tilak Nagar MLA Jarnail Singh, AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj and the youth involved in the incident.
He alleged that the AAP leaders were being targeted for raising questions over alleged corruption in road construction, while Verma had not faced similar action.
Singh said that recently, four-time Tilak Nagar MLA Jarnail Singh had highlighted alleged irregularities in road construction in his constituency through a video. He claimed the video showed a newly constructed road being pulled apart by hand, raising questions about the quality of the work.
Singh said similar concerns had been raised in BJP-ruled states over highways, expressways and bridges allegedly developing defects shortly before or soon after inauguration. He alleged that a similar situation had emerged in Jarnail Singh’s constituency.
According to Singh, when Minister Parvesh Verma reached the area, a young man named Sahib Singh began recording a video showing the condition of the road and how easily parts of the newly constructed surface could allegedly be removed by hand.
Singh alleged that Verma became angry and publicly slapped the youth. He said the incident was captured on video and circulated widely.
The AAP leader said that despite the seriousness of the alleged incident, no FIR had been registered against Verma. Instead, he alleged, an FIR was registered against Jarnail Singh, who had raised the issue of alleged corruption, and against Saurabh Bharadwaj, who was seeking justice for the young man.
Singh termed Tuesday’s incident involving the woman councillor “shameful” and alleged that it reflected the BJP’s approach towards political opponents and protesters.
He claimed that the incident took place outside the Police Commissioner’s office and involved a woman councillor belonging to the Dalit community. Singh questioned the state of law and order in Delhi, saying that if such an incident could allegedly occur outside the office of the city’s top police officer, questions could naturally be raised about the wider security situation.
Singh alleged that the BJP’s objective was to protect those accused of corruption while those raising questions against corruption were being dragged away, assaulted or implicated in what he described as false FIRs.
He said neither Bharadwaj nor Jarnail Singh, nor other AAP workers, would be deterred by such cases.
“We will continue our fight against what we describe as the BJP’s hooliganism, authoritarianism and corruption,” Singh said.
