Washington, Aug 2026 : Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat has arrived in the United States to attend a major Hindu community gathering scheduled to be held in New York City on August 29, with organisers saying the event will focus on unity, civic responsibility, mutual respect and global harmony.
According to the organisers, Bhagwat was welcomed by members of the Universal Oneness Celebration team after his arrival in the US. Photographs released by the group showed the RSS chief participating in a traditional welcome ceremony.
“The world is one family,” the Universal Oneness Celebration said while announcing Bhagwat’s arrival. The organisers said the gathering would encourage participants to look beyond social and cultural divisions and recognise the connections that bind humanity together.
The event is being presented by the American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD) Forum in association with hundreds of cultural, spiritual, service, faith-based and community organisations from across the United States.
Organisers have described the programme as one of the largest and most diverse Hindu community gatherings in the country. It will also coincide with celebrations of Raksha Bandhan, an important Hindu festival symbolising the bond between brothers and sisters.
Bhagwat, who has served as the RSS Sarsanghchalak since 2009, is expected to deliver a major address during the gathering. Organisers noted that his appearances at large public events in the United States are relatively rare, making his participation a significant feature of the programme.
The event will also include addresses by faith leaders, cultural presentations and community programmes centred on the theme of universal harmony.
Organisers said the gathering comes at a time when issues such as social cohesion, pluralism, civic participation and interfaith understanding have gained increasing importance in the United States. The programme will seek to highlight the growing role of Hindu Americans in public life and their contributions to areas including education, healthcare, business, public service, philanthropy and community development.
A central theme of the event will be the ancient Indian philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, meaning “The World Is One Family”. Organisers said the principle would be presented as a way of addressing contemporary challenges through dialogue, mutual respect, shared responsibility and service.
The gathering is expected to bring together members of the Hindu-American community from different linguistic, regional, cultural and organisational backgrounds. According to organisers, the event will demonstrate how a diverse community can come together around shared values while retaining its distinct identities and traditions.
The New York programme will broaden the message of unity by highlighting collective responsibility towards communities, nations, humanity, nature and all creation.
Among those expected to attend are community leaders, entrepreneurs, doctors, educators, lawyers, artists, elected representatives, young leaders, veterans, faith representatives and volunteers.
Representatives from temples, yoga organisations, educational institutions, service organisations, linguistic and regional associations, cultural groups and interfaith communities are also expected to participate.
AHEAD Forum describes itself as a collaborative platform working to promote constructive engagement, civic participation and dialogue among Hindu organisations and community leaders in the US. It also seeks to increase awareness of Hindu philosophy, culture and the contributions of Hindu Americans to wider society.
The RSS, meanwhile, was founded in Nagpur in 1925 by Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. The organisation operates through a nationwide network of local branches and volunteer initiatives, with activities spanning character development, leadership training, education, disaster relief, rural development and community service.
Bhagwat became the RSS's sixth Sarsanghchalak in March 2009, succeeding K.S. Sudarshan. A veterinary sciences graduate, he previously held several organisational positions, including the post of RSS General Secretary, before taking over as chief.
His participation in the New York gathering is expected to draw attention both in India and among the Indian-American community as the event seeks to promote the message of cultural unity, social responsibility and the idea of a shared global family.
