Mumbai, Oct 2026 : Bollywood actor Imran Khan, nephew of superstar Aamir Khan, has reportedly been issued a notice by Mumbai Police directing him to leave India by October 28, days after he participated in a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
According to the information available, action has been initiated against Imran under Sections 7 and 29 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act. The actor has received a copy of the notice. He was detained by Mumbai Police on October 10 in connection with the demonstration held at August Kranti Maidan in south Mumbai.
The action is reportedly linked to allegations that Imran participated in the protest despite not being an Indian citizen. The notice comes amid a separate complaint by BJP leader and former Member of Parliament Kirit Somaiya, who has urged the Centre and immigration authorities to examine the actor’s participation in the demonstration.
On October 13, Somaiya approached the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the Bureau of Immigration, seeking the issuance of a Look Out Circular (LOC) against Imran. He also requested that the actor be prevented from leaving the country until an inquiry into his complaint and the investigation into the Mumbai Police case are completed.
In a letter addressed to Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Somaiya called for directions under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, to restrict the actor’s overseas travel. He further asked the Bureau of Immigration to issue an LOC and alert the police if Imran attempted to leave India.
The complaint relates to the October 10 gathering at August Kranti Maidan, where demonstrators demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Somaiya alleged that the protest had been organised without the necessary permissions and claimed that Imran attended and participated in the gathering before being detained by police.
According to Somaiya’s letter, Gamdevi Police Station registered an FIR in connection with the incident under number 813 of 2026, naming the actor in the case. Somaiya stated that he had not received a copy of the FIR.
The BJP leader also claimed that Imran is a United States citizen and reportedly holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. He urged the authorities to determine whether the actor’s participation in the protest warranted action under Section 7D of the Citizenship Act, 1955, and the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.
The developments place the actor’s immigration status under scrutiny following his appearance at the political demonstration. Further details regarding the police investigation and the legal basis for the notice were not provided in the information available.
Imran Khan’s Film Career
Imran Khan began his association with Bollywood as a child artist, appearing in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992). He made his adult acting debut in 2008 with the romantic comedy Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, which emerged as a commercial success and established him as a promising young actor.
He subsequently appeared in several popular romantic comedies, including I Hate Luv Storys, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. His filmography also includes the action-comedy thriller Delhi Belly, which received considerable attention for its unconventional humour and storyline.
However, a series of box-office disappointments followed, leading the actor to step away from leading roles for several years. His last full-fledged leading role was in Katti Batti (2015), a romantic comedy directed, co-produced and written by Nikhil Advani, in which he starred opposite Kangana Ranaut.
Imran recently returned to the screen with a cameo appearance in Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, a film featuring Vir Das, Mithila Palkar, Mona Singh, Sharib Hashmi and Srushti Tawade. The film follows Happy Patel, an enthusiastic but clumsy spy whose missions lead to unexpected consequences.
The appearance marked a return to films after an extended hiatus. Meanwhile, the police notice and the complaint concerning his participation in the October 10 protest have brought the actor into the spotlight for reasons beyond his film career.
