New Delhi, Aug 2026 : Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran has decided to step down from his position and will not seek another term when his current tenure ends in February 2027, according to a report by NDTV Profit citing sources.
The development comes ahead of the Tata Sons Annual General Meeting scheduled for August 18 and marks a significant leadership transition for one of India's largest and most diversified business groups.
Chandrasekaran, who has headed Tata Sons and the wider Tata Group since January 2017, said he was grateful for the opportunity to serve the organisation after four decades with the group.
“I have completed 40 years of professional life at the Tata Group. I am grateful for the immensely satisfying opportunity to contribute to this venerable institution. Leading Tata Sons over the past decade has been a great honour and a profound responsibility,” he said in a statement.
Chandrasekaran's association with the Tata Group began in 1987, when he joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as an intern. He subsequently rose through the ranks and became TCS Chief Executive Officer in 2009 before taking over as Chairman of Tata Sons in 2017.
His tenure has included a period of major expansion and restructuring across several Tata Group businesses, along with efforts to strengthen the conglomerate's presence in sectors ranging from technology and automobiles to aviation, consumer products and energy.
According to the report, Tata Sons had laid down two conditions in July 2025 for any extension of Chandrasekaran's tenure. These included keeping Tata Sons unlisted and resolving the issue surrounding the stake held by the Shapoorji Pallonji Group.
Tata Sons serves as the principal investment holding company of the Tata Group, while Tata Trusts hold approximately 66 per cent of the company.
The announcement triggered some selling pressure in Tata Group stocks during Wednesday's morning trading session. Tata Consumer Products declined more than one per cent to around Rs 1,066 on the NSE, while TCS fell as much as five per cent.
Titan Company shares were down 1.03 per cent at Rs 5,075.10, while Tata Power declined 0.9 per cent to Rs 376.60.
Chandrasekaran's planned departure comes as the Tata Group continues to manage business restructuring, ownership considerations and its broader capital strategy.
