Nepal PM Balen Shah Faces Major Governance Test After Devastating Floods

New Delhi, Aug 2026 : Barely five months after taking office, Nepal Prime Minister Balendra “Balen” Shah is facing a major test of his leadership following devastating flash floods that swept through three districts along the country’s border with Tibet.

Shah personally visited Nuwakot to assess the damage and review the relief and rescue operations. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, speaking at the Anviksha Summit in Kathmandu, highlighted the Prime Minister’s approach to governance and his response to the unfolding crisis.

Khanal described Shah as a leader focused strongly on results and quick delivery. He said Shah was keen to ensure that government services reached people without unnecessary bureaucratic delays.

“He wants results, and he wants them fast. He’s very focused on deliverables,” Khanal said, adding that Shah trusted his ministers, delegated responsibilities and expected them to deliver measurable outcomes rather than closely supervise every decision.

The floods have caused extensive destruction and claimed at least 162 lives, while more than 500 people remain missing. Nearly 300 Indian nationals are among those reported missing, many of them pilgrims travelling along routes associated with the Mansarovar Yatra.

Khanal said the Nepal government was coordinating closely with foreign embassies to trace missing international nationals and ensure their safety. He stressed that foreign citizens affected by the disaster were receiving the same attention as Nepali citizens.

The Foreign Minister also expressed gratitude to India for its prompt assistance in Nepal’s rescue and relief efforts, saying international support remained crucial as authorities continued to assess the scale of the devastation.

Shah has meanwhile assured citizens that the government is deploying all available resources to respond to the disaster. In a social media update, he outlined coordination among government agencies, non-governmental organisations and international partners to provide emergency assistance to affected communities.

The crisis has therefore emerged as a defining moment for Shah’s early tenure. While the scale of the disaster has created enormous challenges for the government, the Prime Minister’s hands-on response and emphasis on rapid action are also being closely watched.

The situation has brought together two defining aspects of Shah’s leadership: an ambitious focus on efficient governance and the immediate demands of responding to a major humanitarian disaster.
