New Delhi, Aug 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the nation’s 80th Independence Day celebrations at the historic Red Fort in Delhi on Saturday, unfurling the Tricolour and addressing the country from the ramparts for the 13th consecutive year.
With this year’s address, Modi will set a new record among non-Congress prime ministers for the longest uninterrupted run of Independence Day speeches from the Red Fort. Since assuming office in 2014, he has maintained the tradition of personally hoisting the national flag before delivering his address to the nation.
The 80th Independence Day celebrations will have a special focus on the 150th anniversary of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’, while also highlighting the contribution and aspirations of India’s youth in achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
The ceremonial programme will begin with the Prime Minister’s arrival at the Red Fort, followed by the unfurling of the national flag and a 21-gun salute. A ceremonial showering of flowers from a helicopter will also form part of the celebrations.
Following the flag-hoisting ceremony, Prime Minister Modi will address the nation, highlighting India’s journey since Independence, major achievements and the government’s vision for the country’s future.
A major highlight of this year’s programme will be the first-ever mass singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ at the Red Fort as part of the Independence Day celebrations. NCC cadets and My Bharat Volunteers will lead the rendition of the iconic national song.
The celebrations will place considerable emphasis on ‘Yuva Shakti’, recognising the crucial role of India’s young population in driving economic growth, innovation and national development. The youth are expected to play a central role in transforming the country into a developed nation by 2047.
The 80th Independence Day celebrations will therefore bring together India’s rich national heritage and its aspirations for the future.
