Amit Shah’s Political Journey and BJP Leadership
Born in Mumbai in 1964 to Gujarati parents, Amit Shah began his association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at the age of 16. He subsequently became involved with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the RSS-affiliated student organisation, marking the beginning of his organisational activities.
In 1989, Shah received his first major organisational assignment when he was appointed secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Ahmedabad unit.
His electoral career began with the 1997 Gujarat Assembly by-election from the Sarkhej constituency. He subsequently represented Sarkhej and later Naranpura in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, serving as a legislator from 1997 to 2017.
In 2002, Shah joined the Gujarat Cabinet, marking another significant stage in his political career.
His organisational responsibilities expanded nationally, and in 2014, he became the BJP’s national president. During his tenure, the party continued to expand its organisational presence across several states.
Shah is widely regarded as one of the BJP’s principal political strategists and a close associate of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Home Minister Since 2019, Cooperation Minister Since 2021
Amit Shah represents Gandhinagar in the Lok Sabha and has served as Union Home Minister since June 2019. His tenure has included several major policy decisions concerning internal security, Jammu and Kashmir and counterinsurgency operations.
One of the most consequential developments during his tenure was the 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370, which granted special status to the former state of Jammu and Kashmir, alongside the reorganisation of the region into two Union Territories.
His responsibilities have also included measures targeting Left-Wing Extremism, strengthening security coordination and addressing organised crime and narcotics trafficking.
In July 2021, Shah became India’s first Union Minister of Cooperation following the creation of a separate Ministry of Cooperation. The ministry focuses on strengthening cooperative institutions, improving their governance and expanding their contribution to rural development and economic activity.
Focus on National Security and a Drug-Free India
The birthday messages placed particular emphasis on the government’s stated priorities of strengthening internal security, eliminating Maoist violence and combating drug abuse.
The Centre has continued to pursue security operations and development initiatives in areas affected by Left-Wing Extremism, alongside efforts to disrupt narcotics networks and prevent drug trafficking.
Shah’s tenure as Home Minister has therefore remained closely associated with the government’s internal security agenda and its efforts to coordinate law enforcement across the country.
The greetings from PM Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath brought attention to Shah’s political journey and his responsibilities as Home and Cooperation Minister, spanning national security, organisational leadership and cooperative development.
