Aizawl, September 2026: Social Welfare, Women & Child Development Minister Lalrinpuii on Wednesday attended as the chief guest a consultation meeting on the topic, “The Mizo Marriage and Inheritance of Property Act, 2014 – Proposed Amendments”, organised jointly by the National Commission for Women (NCW) and the Mizoram State Commission for Women (MSCW) at the P&PI Conference Hall, RDB, Aizawl.
During the consultation, participants shared various suggestions and views relating to the Mizo Marriage and Inheritance of Property Act.
Addressing the inaugural session, Minister Lalrinpuii welcomed the initiative undertaken by the Women’s Commission to review and deliberate on the Mizo Marriage and Inheritance of Property Act. She said the amended Mizo Marriage and Inheritance of Property Act, 2014, is an important legislation that could have a significant impact on the people of Mizoram, particularly women.
The Minister said the state government accords high priority to the welfare, rights and interests of women. She highlighted the role of the Mizoram State Commission for Women, stating that since 2014, the Commission had received around 545 cases, of which 535 had already been resolved.
She said reviewing laws concerning the status and rights of Mizo women is an important responsibility of the MSCW and that the Commission has been making every effort in this regard.
Lalrinpuii said the Mizoram government has given due importance to the interests of women while amending the legislation. She pointed out that provisions have been incorporated to ensure that, in cases of divorce, women can receive a share of up to 50 per cent of the jointly acquired marital property.
She expressed hope that the consultation would produce positive outcomes and help create greater awareness among the public about the provisions of the law, while also encouraging its meaningful implementation.
The consultation meeting was divided into three sessions focusing separately on marriage, divorce and inheritance of property. Participants were given an opportunity to present their suggestions and views on each subject.
The various recommendations received during the consultation will be examined by the Mizoram State Commission for Women and subsequently submitted to the state government for consideration.
Representatives of voluntary organisations and different churches, along with invited experts, participated in the meeting.
Chairperson C. Zodinpuii of the Mizoram State Commission for Women moderated the meeting and elaborated on the subject under discussion.
The programme was followed by a technical session chaired by T. Lalnunsiama, Member of the Legal Cell, Mizoram Commission for Women.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by the Chairperson.
