US Midterm Elections: Trump Faces Crucial Test as Americans Vote for Congress

Washington, Nov 2026 : Americans head to the polls on Tuesday in midterm elections that will determine whether President Donald Trump retains Republican control of Congress for the final two years of his term or faces a Democratic majority.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 of the 100 Senate seats and 36 governorships are being contested. Most opinion polls indicate that Republicans could face significant setbacks.

The Republican Party enters election day with narrow majorities in both chambers. In the House, Speaker Mike Johnson’s party holds 218 seats, alongside one independent, Kevin Kiley of California. Democrats have 214 seats, while two remain vacant.

According to ABC News, Democrats need a net gain of three seats to reach at least 218 and give Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries a chance to become Speaker.

The Senate is currently divided 53-47 in favour of Republicans. Democrats need to gain four seats to make Chuck Schumer majority leader, while Senate Majority Leader John Thune can afford to lose three seats and retain control with Vice President JD Vance’s tie-breaking vote.

Of the 35 Senate seats up for election, 22 are currently held by Republicans.

The outcome will shape Trump’s ability to advance his legislative agenda during the final two years of his presidency. Earlier, Trump described the midterms as a referendum on the first 20 months of his second administration and urged voters to cast their ballots as if he himself were on the ballot.

A Democratic takeover of the House would give the party’s committee chairs greater authority to launch investigations into the administration. Democrats could also gain leverage over government funding, including allocations for the war with Iran.

Control of the Senate would have additional consequences, giving Democrats the power to oversee confirmation proceedings for federal judges and Cabinet nominees.

For Democrats, however, the Senate remains a difficult challenge. The election map includes several states that Trump won, some by double-digit margins. Even if Democrats secure the House, falling short in the Senate would leave Republicans in control of confirmation votes.

Polling stations are scheduled to close in the first states at 6 pm Eastern time. Results in closely contested races may take several days, with Alaska’s ranked-choice voting process and California’s lengthy vote count potentially delaying final outcomes.
