Central Government Gives Consent for Establishment of NSD Campus in Bihar; Chief Minister Expresses Gratitude to Prime Minister and Union Culture Minister

Patna, Sept 2026: Bihar Chief Minister Shri Samrat Choudhary has expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Union Culture Minister Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat following the Central Government's approval for the establishment of a new campus of the National School of Drama (NSD) in Bihar.
The Chief Minister said the decision would give Bihar's rich theatre and performing arts traditions a new identity and open up new possibilities at the national level.
He said Bihar has an exceptionally rich cultural heritage and is the land of great personalities such as Kalidasa, Ramvriksha Benipuri and Bhikhari Thakur. The state has also had a distinctive and glorious tradition of folk theatre and performing arts.
The Chief Minister said that the establishment of the NSD campus in Bihar would provide young artists with better institutional opportunities for professional theatre training, stagecraft, performing arts and advanced research. Talented artists would no longer have to travel outside the state for specialised training. The campus would also help establish better coordination between Bihar's traditional folk theatre forms and contemporary theatre practices.
He said the Bihar Government has already established the Bihar Sangeet Natak Akademi for the preservation, promotion and coordination of theatre and performing arts. The NSD campus will further strengthen the state's efforts in this direction.
The Chief Minister said the Bihar Government is taking necessary steps to provide suitable land for the NSD campus and to bear 50 per cent of the approved construction cost as its state share. The state government will extend all possible administrative support for the early establishment of the institution.
He said the establishment of an NSD campus in Bihar is not merely about setting up another institution; it represents an investment in the state's cultural heritage, young talent and the future of contemporary theatre.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that coordinated efforts by the Central and state governments would help establish the institution as a strong centre of theatre education and performing arts, further strengthening Bihar's position on India's national theatre map.
