Fuel Crisis in Telangana: Government Steps In with Emergency Measures to Boost Supply

Hyderabad, April 2026 : The Telangana government has initiated urgent measures to tackle fuel shortages across the state, as long queues at petrol pumps and temporary shutdowns continued for the second consecutive day on Tuesday. Authorities have moved swiftly to stabilise supplies and curb panic buying amid an unprecedented surge in demand.

The Civil Supplies Department, under Commissioner M. Stephen Raveendra, has issued emergency directives to Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to significantly ramp up fuel availability. As part of the response, OMCs have begun front-loading the supply chain by taking advance orders from dealers and deploying around 3,100 fuel tankers across the state to ensure uninterrupted distribution.

To closely monitor the situation, the department has intensified its oversight mechanisms. Retail fuel outlets have been directed to submit stock updates every three hours, while senior officials are conducting daily teleconferences to assess supply levels and address bottlenecks in real time.

Special emphasis has also been placed on ensuring that farmers are not affected by the crisis. The government has instructed authorities to prioritise fuel availability for agricultural activities, particularly during the ongoing harvesting season and paddy procurement operations.

Officials revealed that petroleum supplies have been increased by 126 percent across the state since Sunday in an effort to counter the sudden spike in demand. The surge in consumption has been attributed to a combination of factors, including pricing disparities, cross-border demand, and public panic.

One of the key triggers has been a recent hike in industrial diesel prices, which has led bulk consumers to purchase fuel from retail outlets where prices remain comparatively lower. Additionally, supply disruptions in neighbouring states such as Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra have resulted in increased inflow of vehicles into Telangana border districts, further straining local resources.

Compounding the situation, rumours of a possible post-election fuel price hike have sparked panic buying among citizens, leading to hoarding and rapid depletion of stocks at several outlets.

Data from April 27 highlights the scale of the demand surge. Diesel distribution across the state jumped by 151 percent, rising from an average of 7,348 kilolitres to 18,449 kilolitres. Petrol consumption also witnessed a sharp increase of 95 percent, nearly doubling from 5,883 kilolitres to 11,490 kilolitres.

In Hyderabad, authorities have taken additional steps to prevent shortages. Fuel supplies in the city have been increased by 43 percent overall, with diesel stocks rising by 46 percent and petrol stocks by 40 percent. These measures are aimed at ensuring that the capital region remains adequately supplied despite the heightened demand.

The government has reassured the public that there is no actual shortage of fuel in Telangana and that the current situation is being effectively managed. Citizens have been urged to avoid panic buying and to purchase fuel as per their normal requirements.

With aggressive supply augmentation and strict monitoring in place, officials remain confident that the situation will stabilise soon, ensuring smooth availability of fuel for both public and agricultural needs across the state.
