SRH Pull Off Record Chase of 244 to Stun MI Despite Rickelton’s Century

Mumbai, April 2026 : In one of the most electrifying matches of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, Sunrisers Hyderabad produced a sensational batting display to chase down a daunting target of 244 and defeat Mumbai Indians by six wickets at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday.

Score Summary

Mumbai Indians: 243/5 (20 overs)
Sunrisers Hyderabad: 249/4 (18.4 overs)
Result: Sunrisers Hyderabad won by 6 wickets

What appeared to be an imposing total quickly turned into a historic chase, as SRH’s aggressive top order dismantled Mumbai’s bowling attack with fearless strokeplay and relentless intent.

Explosive Start Sets the Tone

Chasing 244, SRH openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head came out with a clear plan—to attack from ball one. Abhishek signalled his intent early, driving Trent Boult for a boundary before taking on Jasprit Bumrah with a towering six.

Head soon joined the onslaught, peppering the boundary with audacious strokes. The duo raced to 43/0 in just three overs, putting immediate pressure on the Mumbai Indians. The introduction of spin did little to slow them down, as they hammered Will Jacks for 19 runs in an over.

By the end of the powerplay, SRH had surged to 92/0—the highest ever conceded by Mumbai Indians in this phase—firmly seizing control of the chase.

Head, Abhishek Dominate Before MI Fightback

Head was in sublime touch, bringing up a blistering half-century off just 20 balls, while Abhishek matched him stroke for stroke. At one stage, SRH were scoring at over 15 runs per over, making the massive target look surprisingly achievable.

Mumbai briefly clawed their way back into the contest when Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar struck twice in two deliveries, dismissing Abhishek for 45 and Ishan Kishan for a duck. Captain Hardik Pandya then removed Head for a brilliant 76, offering a glimmer of hope to the home side.

Klaasen Seals the Chase in Style

However, Heinrich Klaasen ensured there would be no comeback. Continuing his sensational form this season, Klaasen launched a counterattack, smashing boundaries at will and dismantling the bowling in the middle overs.

He raced to a 22-ball half-century and maintained the momentum, finishing unbeaten on 65. A quick cameo from Salil Arora (14 off 6 balls) provided the finishing touches as SRH completed the chase with eight balls to spare.

Rickelton’s Century Powers MI to 243

Earlier, Mumbai Indians had posted a mammoth 243/5, powered by a breathtaking century from Ryan Rickelton. After a cautious start against Pat Cummins, Rickelton and Jacks launched a ferocious counterattack.

The pair propelled MI to 78/0 in the powerplay, with Jacks scoring a rapid 46 off 22 balls. Rickelton, however, stole the show with a sensational innings, reaching his century in just 44 balls—the fastest ever by a Mumbai Indians batter.

He remained unbeaten on 123, anchoring the innings even as wickets fell around him. Contributions from Hardik Pandya (31 off 15) helped MI cross the 240-mark, a total that seemed more than competitive on most occasions.

Pandya Reflects on Missed Opportunities

Despite the massive total, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya admitted his side fell short in execution. He pointed to poor bowling and missed chances as key factors behind the defeat.

Pandya acknowledged that SRH’s aggressive start put MI on the back foot early, and his bowlers were unable to regain control. Dropped catches further compounded their problems, allowing SRH’s batters to capitalise fully.

“It wasn’t our day. We had the runs on the board, but we didn’t execute well enough,” Pandya said, adding that the team would need to regroup quickly.

He also reflected on the emotional aspect of the loss, noting that the team must perform better to repay the faith of their supporters.

A Night to Remember

The match will be remembered as one of the greatest chases in IPL history. On a pitch where scoring seemed effortless, SRH’s fearless approach and clinical execution redefined the limits of T20 cricket.

While Rickelton’s century was a standout performance, it ultimately ended in a losing cause as SRH’s trio of Head, Abhishek, and Klaasen delivered a batting masterclass.

With this victory, Sunrisers Hyderabad not only secured two crucial points but also sent a strong message to the rest of the league—no total is safe when their batting unit fires in unison.
