AIADMK MLAs to Meet Amid Buzz of Possible Support to Vijay’s TVK Government

May 2026 : A crucial political meeting is set to take place in Chennai on Wednesday as newly elected legislators of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) gather to deliberate on their next course of action. The meeting comes amid growing speculation that sections within the party may favour extending outside support to C. Joseph Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which is attempting to form the next government in Tamil Nadu.

The political situation in the state remains fluid following a fractured mandate in the recently concluded Assembly elections. TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member House, but fell short of the majority mark of 118. As per convention, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is expected to invite Vijay to form the government. However, he will need to prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly within a stipulated timeframe.

Complicating matters further, Vijay contested and won from two constituencies and will have to vacate one, effectively reducing TVK’s tally to 107. With the Speaker typically abstaining from voting except in the case of a tie, the party may require the support of at least 11 to 12 additional MLAs to comfortably win a confidence motion.

Given that TVK contested the elections independently, it lacks pre-poll allies, leading to intense post-election negotiations. Both major political blocs in the state—the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance and the AIADMK-led front—are now central to these discussions.

Sources suggest that the Indian National Congress, which secured five seats as part of the DMK alliance, is inclined towards supporting TVK. The possibility of cooperation gained traction after Rahul Gandhi reportedly congratulated Vijay following the election results, fuelling speculation about a potential understanding.

At the same time, the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), which won four seats within the AIADMK alliance, is also believed to be open to backing TVK. Political circles are abuzz with reports that a meeting between PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss and Vijay could take place soon, potentially shaping the post-poll equation.

Vijay has already signalled his openness to coalition politics, raising expectations among smaller parties that cabinet positions may be offered in exchange for support. Such a development could significantly alter Tamil Nadu’s long-standing bipolar political structure dominated by the DMK and AIADMK.

If the AIADMK ultimately opts to extend outside support, it could prove decisive. Such a move would allow TVK to comfortably cross the majority threshold while enabling AIADMK to retain strategic leverage without directly joining the government.

As political negotiations intensify, the AIADMK meeting in Chennai is expected to play a pivotal role in determining the future course of governance in Tamil Nadu, with all eyes on whether the party chooses opposition, neutrality, or a supportive stance.
