PM Modi Calls for Self-Reliance, Urges Citizens to Cut Dependence on Imports, Promote ‘Vocal for Local’

Vadodara, May 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday made a strong appeal for greater economic self-reliance, urging citizens to adopt disciplined consumption habits and reduce dependence on imported goods, gold, and fossil fuels. He was addressing a public gathering in Vadodara.

Reiterating his vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, the Prime Minister said the time has come to turn “Vocal for Local” into a nationwide mass movement. He urged people to actively support domestic products and strengthen Indian industries by prioritising locally made goods in everyday consumption.

Highlighting the economic impact of imports, he noted that excessive dependence on foreign products puts pressure on India’s foreign exchange reserves. He also specifically referred to gold imports, stating that a large portion of national resources is spent on the precious metal.

Calling for restraint in non-essential spending, PM Modi remarked that gold purchases should be deferred, especially in the current global situation, until economic conditions stabilise further.

He also spoke about edible oil consumption, urging citizens to moderate its use due to both health concerns and its import burden on the economy. According to him, reduced consumption would benefit not only individuals’ well-being but also strengthen the national economy by lowering import dependency.

On energy usage, the Prime Minister once again emphasised the importance of reducing fuel consumption. He encouraged citizens to adopt public transport, electric vehicles, and shared mobility solutions such as carpooling, particularly in households with multiple vehicles.

Extending his appeal to lifestyle choices, PM Modi also spoke about overseas travel and destination weddings. He cautioned that such practices contribute significantly to foreign exchange outflow and suggested that Indians should increasingly opt for domestic destinations.

He highlighted India’s rich cultural and scenic diversity, stating that the country itself offers world-class venues for travel and celebrations. Referring to the Statue of Unity, he said India has iconic destinations suitable for major life events.

“There can be no better place than India for weddings. I would urge all of you to get married at the Statue of Unity. Sardar Patel will also bless you,” he said, encouraging citizens to celebrate important occasions within the country.

The Prime Minister also urged farmers to adopt natural farming practices and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers, stressing that soil health and environmental sustainability are crucial for the long-term future of Indian agriculture.

He concluded by reiterating that collective discipline in consumption and production habits is essential for building a stronger, self-reliant India.
