Pant Opts to Bowl as LSG Make Three Changes Against CSK in Crucial IPL Clash

Lucknow, May 2026 : Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant won the toss and elected to bowl first against Chennai Super Kings in an important Indian Premier League clash at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium on Friday, with both teams entering the contest under contrasting circumstances.

While Chennai Super Kings remain firmly in contention for a playoff berth and are aiming to break into the top four of the points table, Lucknow Super Giants have already been eliminated from the race and are now playing for pride in the closing stages of a disappointing campaign.

LSG made three changes to their playing XI, bringing in Akash Singh, Abdul Samad and Mukul Choudhary as they looked to experiment with combinations and assess options for the future.

After opting to field first, Pant explained that the surface appeared slightly sticky and difficult for batting early on.

“The wicket is looking a little bit tacky, so we felt bowling first would be the better option. As a team, we still have a lot to achieve. We run on trust and that’s something we continue to believe in,” Pant said at the toss.

The LSG skipper admitted that the season had been frustrating but stressed that the squad still had plenty of positives to build on.

“There’s definitely no running away from the way we’ve played this season. At the same time, we know the potential we have as a team. Sometimes things don’t go your way, but we still need to play good cricket and keep improving every day,” he added.

Pant also indicated that the franchise is already looking ahead to the next season and trying out different combinations.

“We are trying a few things for next season and looking to give our 200 percent regardless of the situation,” he remarked.

For Chennai Super Kings, the match carried huge significance in the playoff race. A victory would substantially improve their chances of securing a place in the knockout stage.

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad confirmed that Australian pacer Spencer Johnson was making his debut for the franchise, replacing the injured Jamie Overton. Gurjapneet Singh also came into the side in place of Akeal Hosein during the bowling innings.

“It is always a privilege to wear the yellow jersey,” Gaikwad said.

He acknowledged that conditions at the Ekana Stadium could favour bowlers initially because of the moisture in the pitch.

“There is a bit of moisture to start with, but if we bat well and put up 170-180, it could become a challenging total on this wicket,” he observed.

Gaikwad also spoke about the challenges posed by injuries and constant team changes during the season.

“It is tough when you have to keep changing combinations regularly, but some things are beyond our control. At the same time, it gives opportunities to younger players. Urvil has come in, Mukesh has come in, and these experiences help them grow,” he said.

The CSK skipper added that the team has been approaching every game as a virtual knockout match for some time now.

“It has been a must-win situation for us for a while now, and we want to take it one game at a time,” he added.
