Xi Warns Trump Over Taiwan During High-Stakes Beijing Summit

Washington, May 2026 : Chinese President Xi Jinping warned US President Donald Trump that mishandling the Taiwan issue could lead to “clashes and even conflicts” as the two leaders held crucial talks in Beijing aimed at stabilising relations between the world’s two largest economies amid rising geopolitical tensions.

According to reports published by major international media organisations including The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and CNN, Xi delivered the warning during closed-door discussions at the Great Hall of the People during Trump’s first official visit to China in nearly nine years.

Chinese officials quoted Xi as telling Trump that Taiwan remained the “most important issue” in China-US relations.

“The Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-US relations,” Xi reportedly said during the meeting.

“If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy,” he warned.

Trump did not publicly respond to Xi’s remarks on Taiwan. Instead, the White House focused on the broader agenda of the summit, highlighting discussions on trade, investment, artificial intelligence and the situation involving Iran.

Officials from both countries stated that they agreed the Strait of Hormuz must remain open and reiterated that Iran should never possess nuclear weapons.

The summit combined elaborate diplomatic symbolism with strategic negotiations.

According to reports, Xi accorded Trump a grand ceremonial welcome that included a 21-gun salute, military bands and schoolchildren waving the flags of both nations outside the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Trump later described the reception as “an honor like few have ever seen before”.

The American delegation accompanying Trump included senior cabinet officials such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Several major business leaders were also part of the delegation, including Tim Cook of Apple, Jensen Huang of NVIDIA, Elon Musk of Tesla and Mastercard executive Michael Miebach.

The two leaders also toured Beijing’s historic Temple of Heaven before attending a state banquet at the Golden Hall, where both sides publicly projected optimism regarding bilateral ties despite deep strategic mistrust.

Xi reportedly remarked that his “China Dream” and Trump’s “Make America Great Again” vision “can go hand in hand”.

Trade emerged as one of the most important themes of the summit.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer reportedly stated that China was expected to purchase billions of dollars worth of American agricultural products annually over the next three years.

He also said China had renewed export licences for certain American beef suppliers and discussions were underway regarding tariff reductions on goods worth nearly $30 billion.

Trump additionally claimed that China had agreed to purchase 200 Boeing aircraft and pledged not to supply military equipment to Iran.

Artificial intelligence cooperation also featured prominently during the discussions. Reports indicated that both countries were working on protocols to prevent advanced AI technologies from falling into the hands of non-state actors.

While Chinese officials framed the summit around “strategic stability” and management of global competition, the White House emphasised trade rebalancing, investment access and economic cooperation.

Despite the warm public optics, analysts noted that Xi’s sharp warning on Taiwan underscored the continuing strategic rivalry and deep divisions shaping the future of China-US relations.
