Andhra Pradesh Announces Cash Incentive for Higher Births as CM Naidu Pushes Population Growth Agenda

Amaravati, May 2026: In a significant policy shift aimed at addressing declining birth rates, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday announced financial incentives for families opting for more children, declaring Rs 30,000 for the third child and Rs 40,000 for the fourth child.

The announcement was made during a public meeting at Narasannapeta in Srikakulam district as part of the ‘Swachhandhra-Swarnandhra’ programme, where the Chief Minister outlined a new approach to population management and demographic balance in the state.

Key Highlights of the Announcement:

Cash Incentives for Larger Families
Naidu stated that parents would receive the incentive amount immediately after the birth of the child. “For the third child, we will give Rs 30,000 immediately after birth. For the fourth child, we will give Rs 40,000,” he said, drawing applause and cheers from the audience.

He also remarked that children are the true wealth of a nation and essential for its long-term development and economic strength.

Shift in Population Policy Approach
The Chief Minister acknowledged that he had earlier supported family planning initiatives but said changing demographic trends now require a revised approach. He emphasized that declining population rates and rising ageing populations in several countries are creating economic challenges.

He said Andhra Pradesh would introduce a structured “Children Are Wealth” initiative soon, aimed at encouraging population growth while ensuring proper planning and welfare support.

Concerns Over Declining Birth Rates
Naidu noted that in many regions, families are limiting themselves to one child, which he said has contributed to population decline. He warned that such trends could negatively impact future economic growth and workforce availability.

He stressed that the state government would implement a Population Management Policy to address the issue and promote balanced demographic development.

Strengthening Welfare Support Systems
The Chief Minister highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen Anganwadi centres to improve nutrition for mothers and children under the Women and Child Welfare Department. He said these centres play a crucial role in early childhood care and maternal health.

He also pointed out that the government is already providing Rs 15,000 financial assistance under the ‘Talli Ki Vandanam’ (Salute to the Mother) scheme, aimed at supporting mothers after childbirth.

Broader Development Vision
Naidu reiterated that population growth should be seen as part of a larger development strategy. He said that children represent not only family joy but also national strength, and policies must reflect long-term planning for education, healthcare, and employment.

The announcement marks one of the most direct governmental interventions linking financial incentives to childbirth in recent years, reflecting the state’s concern over demographic imbalance and its potential economic impact.
