Kamal Haasan Meets Tamil Nadu CM Vijay, Pitches 6-Key Reforms for Film Industry Revival
Mumbai, May 2026: Actor Kamal Haasan recently met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and submitted a set of key proposals aimed at strengthening the Tamil film industry. One of his major demands includes a mandatory 8-week OTT release window for all films releasing in the state, aimed at supporting theatres and distributors.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Kamal Haasan shared the details of his meeting and listed six major suggestions presented before the Chief Minister for the welfare and long-term sustainability of the Tamil cinema ecosystem.
Key Demands Presented by Kamal Haasan:
1. State-Owned OTT Platform
Haasan proposed the creation of a Tamil Nadu government-backed OTT platform that would host Tamil films, independent cinema, and documentaries, making regional content more accessible to audiences.
2. Removal of Local Body Entertainment Tax
He demanded the abolition of the 4% local body entertainment tax imposed on films, stating that it increases the financial burden on producers and exhibitors.
3. Strong Anti-Piracy Mechanism
He called for the formation of a dedicated anti-piracy unit within the Tamil Nadu Police Cyber Crime Department. This unit should have real-time powers to remove pirated content and protect the interests of the Tamil film industry.
4. Increase in Daily Film Shows
Haasan suggested allowing five shows per day for all films in Tamil Nadu to improve theatre revenue and help revive the struggling exhibition sector.
5. Mandatory 8-Week OTT Window
One of the most significant proposals was a compulsory eight-week gap between theatrical release and OTT streaming. According to him, this would protect box office revenues and ensure financial stability for theatre owners and distributors.
6. Film Production Incentive Scheme
He also recommended a 10% production incentive on film budgets for projects that complete over 50% of their shooting in Tamil Nadu. This, he said, would help restore the state as a major hub for film production in India.
Sharing his experience of the meeting, Haasan said on X: “Today, I met in person with the Honorable Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Brother Vijay @TVKVijayHQ, and conveyed my best wishes. He enthusiastically shared many dreams for the betterment of Tamil Nadu. The humility and affection he displayed during the meeting filled me with pride.”
He further added that Vijay expressed a strong vision for the development of the state and the creative industries.
Earlier, following Vijay’s swearing-in as Chief Minister on May 10, Kamal Haasan had publicly congratulated him and expressed hope that Tamil Nadu would “shine under his leadership.”
The meeting is being seen as a significant interaction between cinema and governance, with potential implications for the future of the Tamil film industry, especially in areas of digital distribution, taxation, and production policy.
