Hezbollah Destroyed Israeli Iron Dome Battery By FPV Drone Connected To The Operator With A Fibre Optic Cable.
Beirut; May 2026: Hezbollah has released a video showing a first-person view (FPV) drone crashing into a battery of Israel’s Iron Dome system on the northern border. The Israeli military has not issued an official comment on the incident, although Israeli military sources have not unofficially denied the authenticity of the footage, which appears to have been recorded a few days ago. The video also shows a second attack carried out by the group the following day against the same location, targeting a military team attempting to replace the platform damaged 24 hours earlier.
This attack represents the materialisation of a dilemma that the Israeli army has long faced in dealing with the threat of direct-view drones, specifically those equipped with fibre optic cables.
This technology connects the operator to the drone via a thin physical cable no more than 0.5 mm of thickness, thus negating the effects of electronic warfare and spectral jamming systems, upon which Israeli defence systems rely. The drone emits no electromagnetic signal, making it virtually impossible to pinpoint its launch location.
Largely attributed to their small size, 04 electric motors, and low-altitude flight, FPV drones have virtually no radar or thermal signature. Electro-optical or acoustic sensors appear to be the most realistic means of detecting them, although this provides a much shorter warning time compared to traditional radar. Since the start of the current military campaign against Hezbollah in March 2026, and specifically after the ceasefire came into effect on April 18th, quadcopter drones, especially fibre-optic ones, have emerged as the organisation’s most prominent weapons against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.
In recent weeks, the group has launched more than 80 explosive drones, of which about 15 hit their targets, killing five soldiers and wounding dozens. This shift in Hezbollah’s tactics is a direct reflection of what was seen in the war between Russia and Ukraine , where this weapon became a key lethal factor during the year 2025.
Estimates from the Israeli army indicate the presence of dozens of FPV drone operators in southern Lebanon, who often operate from inside civilian homes, and it is possible that they are launched from within the “Yellow Line” established by Israel.
Often, the launch of an explosive drone is preceded by the dispatch of a reconnaissance drone to accurately identify the target. On the ground, the Israeli army is seeking to accelerate the deployment of field solutions, ranging from passive protection nets and defensive counterattack drones to mobile laser systems. However, kinetic interception remains a major challenge due to the difficulty of tracking small, fast, and manoeuvrable targets. During a visit to southern Lebanon last week, senior Israeli officials noted the existence of new experimental programs to improve detection and engagement capabilities, while acknowledging that the military is still trying to keep pace with the real-time evolution of these threats.
[[Attacking an asset like the Iron Dome has broader operational implications. The Iron Dome’s batteries, along with the David and Arrow systems, are the most critical and vulnerable, as a hit on them would cause a collapse in the overall defence, potentially leading to the erosion of Israel’s defensive shield in the border sector. This would create gaps that would allow Hezbollah’s long-range missiles and drones to reach targets in northern Israel and within the Israeli-occupied strip of southern Lebanon. Such a scenario would increase the cost of the Israeli military presence and strengthen Hezbollah’s objective of pressing Israel to withdraw]].
In the diplomatic arena, Lebanon and Israel are preparing to hold a third round of talks in Washington on Thursday(21st May) and Friday(22nd), led by veteran diplomat Simon Karam, appointed by Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to head his country’s delegation.
According to an Israeli official, this round of talks will, for the first time, include the participation of military representatives to discuss more specific measures for Hezbollah’s disarmament. These steps are being taken within the framework of the truce clauses announced by Washington, under which Israel reserves the right to act against planned, imminent, or ongoing attacks, while its forces continue to operate behind a “yellow line” extending some 10 kilometres north of the Lebanese border, after having warned residents not to return to that area.
