Mamit District: Accessibility Arrangements for PWDs (Barrier-Free Environment) Reviewed by Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities

Mamit, May 2026: Pi Vanlaldiki Sailo, Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), inspected various government offices and institutions within Mamit town, including the Mamit DC Office, District Hospital Mamit, Government Mamit College, Government Mamit High School, Government Mamit Higher Secondary School, and the DPC Office under Samagra, to review the implementation of access audit measures aimed at creating a barrier-free environment for persons with disabilities.

The Commissioner stated that persons with disabilities require special attention and emphasized the need to support them so that they can live normal and dignified lives. She noted that even though many improvements have been made, there is still a need for continuous efforts to ensure accessibility in all areas. She added that, as per government guidelines, it is essential to make offices, educational institutions, churches, and public gathering places accessible to persons with disabilities.

She further informed that the Access Audit initiative in Mizoram was launched on February 21, 2025, under the Office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities. Along with inspections of offices in Mamit district, the programme has already been implemented in 10 districts of Mizoram, and efforts are underway to complete audits across the entire state.

The Government of India, under the Accessible India Campaign, places strong emphasis on Access Audits to ensure equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. The objective is to make public infrastructure accessible for wheelchair users, the visually impaired, and others with disabilities. Accordingly, strict instructions have been issued to make public buildings, churches, government offices, schools, and other public spaces fully accessible. As part of this initiative, audit teams along with representatives of persons with disabilities regularly inspect such facilities, and the Access Audit programme is being actively implemented across India.

During today’s inspection, facilities such as wheelchair access points, Braille signage for the visually impaired, and overall accessibility arrangements in public buildings were assessed. Design plans for infrastructure improvements were also submitted. The inspection team included SDC Pi Lalrammuani Hnamte and representatives from line departments.
