Sabalenka Powers Past Osaka, Reaches 14th Straight Grand Slam Quarterfinal

Paris, June 2026 : World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka continued her impressive run at the French Open, defeating former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka 7-5, 6-3 in a high-quality fourth-round encounter at Roland Garros on Monday to book her place in the quarterfinals.

The victory marked Sabalenka’s 14th consecutive appearance in a Grand Slam quarterfinal, underlining her remarkable consistency on the sport’s biggest stages. She remains the only player left in the women’s singles draw who has previously reached a Grand Slam final and is now firmly focused on capturing her maiden French Open title.

Sabalenka will next face 25th seed Diana Shnaider, who advanced to her first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal after overcoming 19th seed Madison Keys in a hard-fought three-set contest.

The much-anticipated clash between Sabalenka and Osaka began with the Japanese star taking early control. Osaka won the opening two games as Sabalenka struggled to find her rhythm, committing five unforced errors, including a costly double fault on break point, which handed her opponent an early advantage.

However, the top seed quickly regained her composure. Sabalenka responded with aggressive baseline play and struck two clean forehand winners to immediately break back. From that point onward, she settled into a dominant serving rhythm and rarely allowed Osaka any opportunities to mount sustained pressure.

After recovering from the early setback, Sabalenka did not face a single break point for the remainder of the match. Her serve proved nearly untouchable, with Osaka finding few chances to challenge the Belarusian’s authority on serve.

The crucial phase of the match came in the second set. With Osaka leading 3-2, the sixth game became a fiercely contested battle that stretched to deuce. Sabalenka managed to hold firm, and that moment proved decisive. Building on the momentum, she reeled off four consecutive games to seize complete control and close out the match in straight sets.

The result keeps Sabalenka’s French Open dream alive after she narrowly missed out on the title last year. Determined not to be distracted by expectations or past disappointments, she emphasized her focus on the present challenge.

“I’m not really overthinking,” Sabalenka said after the match. “I’ve been able to separate myself from what happened here before. Anything can happen in tennis and in sport. I’m just trying to focus on myself and make sure that when I’m competing, I’m bringing my best level.”

The top seed added that her primary objective remains unchanged.

“I’m fighting and doing everything I can to get this trophy,” she said.

With her confidence growing and her form peaking at the right time, Sabalenka has strengthened her status as one of the leading contenders for the Roland Garros crown.
