04 Seats Of 04 States – North East’s Rajya Sabha Contest Eyes Key Political Signals.

June 2026: With the Rajya Sabha elections less than a fortnight away, political activity across Northeast has shifted into high gear. Of the 24 seats set to fall vacant across 10 states ahead of the June 18 polls, 04 are in the Northeast: 01 each in Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh.

The stakes are significant in each of these states, a single seat means every vote counts and every name floated triggers a fresh round of speculation.

Manipur: The Biren question dominates In Manipur, the most closely watched political question is not just who will contest the Rajya Sabha seat, but what the choice will reveal about the state’s political future.

Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam sought to reassure party workers and observers today (Thursday – 04th June 2026) saying the election process is “moving on the right track” following the Election Commission’s formal notification.

“Just before the time lapses, we’ll announce the candidate”, he told the press, when pressed on the BJP’s nominee for the seat currently held by Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba, whose term is nearing its end.

But the name dominating the conversation is that of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. Party sources confirm that discussions are underway within the BJP, with Singh, Manipur Pradesh BJP President A. Sharda Devi, and senior leader Premananda Sharma all said to be under consideration.

However, the deeper question preoccupying political circles, however, is strategic; will Biren Singh accept a Rajya Sabha nomination, effectively stepping away from state politics and relocating to New Delhi, or will he hold his ground in Manipur ahead of Assembly elections expected early next year? The answer, when it comes, will carry implications well beyond a single upper house seat.

Meghalaya: With the MDA 2.0 rallying behind James Sangma presents a sharper picture. The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance 2.0 (MDA 2.0) has named National People’s Party (NPP) leader James PK Sangma as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election scheduled for June 18.

The decision was taken at a meeting of leaders of the parliamentary parties of the alliance’s constituent partners, chaired by Chief Minister and MDA 2.0 leader Conrad K Sangma, yesterday (Wednesday – 03rd June 2026). According to alliance leaders, the coalition partners unanimously agreed to back the nominee of the NPP, the largest constituent of the ruling alliance, in keeping with the convention followed by the MDA 2.0. A few other leaders from the Garo-Jaintia Hills belt were reportedly weighed before the coalition settled on Sangma’s name, but the internal deliberations appear to have reached a consensus.

Mizoram: The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has announced its candidate for the June 18 election – party spokesperson K. Laltluangkima. The announcement places ZPM firmly in the contest for the state’s lone Rajya Sabha seat. The opposition picture remains less defined. The Congress, which holds just a single seat in the 40-member Assembly, is widely expected to sit out the election. The Mizo National Front (MNF), the previous ruling party, is, however, expected to field a nominee, setting up a contest of sorts, though ZPM’s numerical advantage in the House makes the outcome difficult to contest.

Arunachal Pradesh: 15 aspirants, one ticket; The selection process within the BJP in Arunachal Pradesh has reportedly turned into one of the more competitive internal contests in the region, with as many as 15 party members having filed their interest for the state’s lone Rajya Sabha seat. State BJP president Kaling Moyong confirmed the development yesterday (Wednesday – 03rd June) saying the process is underway and that no candidate has been finalised so far. The party is expected to announce its candidate well before the nomination deadline of June 08 at 15:00 hours.

Nationally, 24 of the 27 Rajya Sabha seats notified by the Election Commission have fallen vacant following the retirement of sitting members. These seats are spread across Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand, in addition to the four northeastern states. In the Northeast, however, the elections carry added political significance, serving as a test of the ruling parties’ and coalitions’ strength, unity and legislative arithmetic. The Election Commission has laid out a tight schedule for the polls. The nomination process began on 01st June, while scrutiny of papers is slated for 09th June. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until June 11. Voting will be held on June 18 from 08:00 hours to 16:00 hours, with the counting of votes scheduled to begin at 17:00 hours on the same day.
