7.8-Magnitude Earthquake Off Southern Philippines Leaves Five Dead, Triggers Tsunami Alert

Manila, June 2026 : At least five people have been reported dead after a powerful 7.8-magnitude offshore earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Sunday morning, prompting tsunami warnings, widespread evacuations, and emergency response operations across several coastal provinces.

According to local disaster management officials, authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of casualties and damage caused by the strong tremor, which shook large parts of Mindanao Island and neighboring regions.

Agripino Dacera, disaster management chief in General Santos City, said that while five fatalities have been reported so far, verification efforts are still underway as rescue teams continue to gather information from affected communities.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the tectonic earthquake occurred at 7:37 a.m. local time at a depth of 33 kilometers. The epicenter was located approximately 32 kilometers southwest of Maasim town in Sarangani Province, off the southern coast of Mindanao, near the densely populated city of General Santos, home to around 700,000 residents.

The powerful quake was felt across several provinces in southern Philippines, causing panic among residents and forcing many people to rush out of homes, offices, and commercial establishments. Local media reports indicated that some buildings sustained structural damage, while power outages were reported in a number of areas.

Authorities also confirmed that the earthquake generated tsunami activity. The highest wave recorded so far measured 1.4 meters, raising concerns for coastal communities located near the epicenter.

Following the quake, PHIVOLCS issued tsunami warnings for nine coastal provinces and strongly advised residents to immediately move to higher ground or relocate farther inland as a precautionary measure. Experts warned that tsunami waves could continue to affect coastal areas for several hours.

Forecasts indicate that the first significant tsunami waves are expected to reach parts of the affected coastline on Monday morning, prompting local governments to intensify evacuation efforts and emergency preparedness measures.

Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. ordered disaster response agencies to mobilize resources and maintain continuous monitoring of vulnerable areas. He also urged residents living along coastal zones to follow evacuation orders and prioritize safety.

Emergency responders, police personnel, and local government units have been deployed to assess infrastructure damage, assist displaced residents, and provide relief support where needed.

The earthquake struck near Mindanao, the Philippines’ second-largest island, which lies within one of the world’s most seismically active regions. The country frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a vast belt of tectonic activity surrounding the Pacific Ocean.

The region is characterized by frequent earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tectonic movements, making seismic events a recurring challenge for the archipelago.

Authorities have urged residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks and to continue following official advisories as emergency assessments and response operations continue across the affected areas.
