Sarbananda Sonowal Underscores ₹5,028 Crore Development Pipeline as Mumbai Port Marks 154th Foundation Day

New Delhi, June 25, 2026: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal underscored a development pipeline of 63 projects worth ₹5,028.17 crore as Mumbai Port Authority celebrated its 154th Foundation Day in Mumbai, reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to transforming one of India’s oldest ports into a modern, sustainable and future-ready maritime hub.

The projects comprise seven inaugurated projects worth ₹132.29 crore, 34 foundation stone-laying projects worth ₹1,354.59 crore and 22 newly announced projects worth ₹3,541.29 crore, spanning port infrastructure, waterfront development, logistics and operational efficiency.

Addressing the gathering, Sonowal congratulated Mumbai Port Authority on completing 154 years of service and said the port continues to play a pivotal role in India’s maritime transformation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Mumbai Port Authority has been a cornerstone of India’s maritime history for more than a century and a half. Today, as India moves towards Viksit Bharat 2047, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, our ports are evolving into engines of economic growth, sustainability and global competitiveness. The projects showcased today reflect our commitment to building world-class port infrastructure, improving logistics efficiency, promoting cruise tourism, strengthening coastal shipping and creating opportunities for future generations,” Sonowal said.

The Union Minister also dedicated two key agreements during the programme, the Indira Dock Operations and Maintenance Agreement and the Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina Agreement, which are expected to strengthen port operations, accelerate waterfront development and enhance the productive utilisation of Mumbai Port’s assets.

The Foundation Day celebrations were held under the theme “Together We Can,” recognising the contributions of officers, employees, workers, port users, shipping lines, trade partners, service providers and other stakeholders who have contributed to the growth of Mumbai Port Authority over its 154-year journey.

Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur said Mumbai Port Authority continues to serve as a vital pillar of India’s maritime ecosystem and acknowledged the dedication of its officers, employees and stakeholders in sustaining the port’s legacy and future growth.

The programme also featured a presentation on the journey of Mumbai Port Authority, a commemorative film marking 100 years of the Mumbai Port Sports Club, and the presentation of awards to sports achievers, employees and stakeholders for their outstanding contributions.

The event was attended by Vijay Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways; Dr. M. Angamuthu, chairperson, Mumbai Port Authority; Adesh Titarmare, deputy chairperson, Mumbai Port Authority; Gaurav Dayal, chairperson, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority; Mayank Kumar, principal chief commissioner, Mumbai Customs Zone-I, along with senior officials, industry representatives and maritime stakeholders.
