Oliver Kahn Hails Messi-Ronaldo Rivalry as Football’s Greatest, Reflects on World Cup Legacy
New Delhi, June 2026 : German football great Oliver Kahn has described the rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as one of the most extraordinary chapters in football history, saying the two legends continually inspired each other to reach unprecedented levels of excellence for nearly two decades.
Speaking as part of the FIFA World Cup 2026 expert panel on ZEE5, the former Germany captain said the sustained brilliance and consistency displayed by Messi and Ronaldo throughout their careers set a benchmark that future generations may struggle to match.
According to Kahn, the rivalry between the two icons was never fuelled by words or off-field exchanges but by their remarkable performances on the pitch, where each constantly sought to outperform the other.
“Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have pushed each other for almost two decades, and it is truly remarkable to see the level of football they continue to play. Their rivalry was never built on words; it was built on performances. Every season, they pushed each other to become even better. Football may never see another rivalry with that level of consistency and excellence,” Kahn said.
Messi and Ronaldo have dominated world football for much of the past 20 years, breaking countless records while enjoying glittering careers with their respective clubs. Their battles in Spain’s La Liga during their time with Barcelona and Real Madrid defined an era and captivated football fans across the globe.
However, despite their numerous encounters in club football, the two legends have never faced each other at a FIFA World Cup. With the ongoing 2026 tournament widely expected to be the final World Cup appearance for both superstars, fans are hoping they can add another memorable chapter to their storied careers on football’s biggest stage.
Kahn also reflected on his own unforgettable experience at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where he led Germany to the final and became the only goalkeeper in the tournament’s history to win the prestigious Golden Ball award as the competition’s best player.
Although Germany lost the final to Brazil, Kahn said the tournament remains one of the defining moments of his career, even if the pain of missing out on the World Cup title still lingers.
“The 2002 World Cup remains one of the greatest experiences of my career. Losing the final still hurts because, as an athlete, you always want to win, especially the World Cup. But with time, you begin to appreciate the journey, the team spirit and the experiences you shared with the squad,” he said.
Kahn admitted that while receiving the Golden Ball was an extraordinary honour, it could never replace the satisfaction of lifting football’s most coveted trophy.
“Winning the Golden Ball as a goalkeeper was a tremendous honour and something very special. However, I would still exchange it for a World Cup trophy,” he added.
The legendary goalkeeper also shared words of encouragement for young players preparing to compete on football’s grandest stage, stressing the importance of continuous learning, mental strength and embracing pressure rather than fearing it.
“My advice to young players is simple: learn, learn and keep learning. Most importantly, learn to enjoy pressure instead of fearing it. At the World Cup, the entire world is watching you, but that is exactly what you play football for,” Kahn said.
He emphasised that concentration is often the difference between success and failure in a World Cup, where a single moment can define an entire tournament.
“Stay focused on every single action because one moment can define your entire tournament,” he added.
Kahn’s reflections serve as both a tribute to football’s greatest modern rivalry and a reminder of the enduring significance of the FIFA World Cup, where careers are defined and legends are made.
