IRCTC Launches Beta Version of Revamped Ticket Booking Website After Two-Decade Overhaul

New Delhi, July 2026 : The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) on Wednesday launched the beta version of its redesigned ticket booking website, marking the first major overhaul of the platform since its debut more than two decades ago. The revamped portal is aimed at making online train ticket booking faster, simpler and more user-friendly while serving as the foundation for a modernised digital reservation system.

The Ministry of Railways announced that the beta version is now live and available for public use. Passengers can access it through a dedicated link on the existing IRCTC homepage, explore the new features and submit feedback before the final version is officially rolled out in the coming weeks.

The launch forms part of the Railways’ broader digital transformation initiative to upgrade ticketing infrastructure and enhance the online booking experience for millions of passengers across the country.

According to the ministry, the redesign was inspired by suggestions from students of the Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), who shared their ideas with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during an interaction. Several of the students’ recommendations were incorporated into the new website, making it more intuitive and easier to navigate.

First introduced in 2002, the IRCTC portal has become India’s primary online railway ticketing platform, handling an average of nearly 14.5 lakh ticket bookings every day. The latest beta version features a refreshed interface with a cleaner layout, improved navigation and a simplified booking process.

One of the major enhancements is the removal of unnecessary CAPTCHA prompts, intrusive pop-up windows and flashing graphics that often slowed down the booking process and distracted users. The streamlined design is expected to improve the overall user experience, particularly during high-demand booking periods.

The revamped website also introduces a unified seat availability display, allowing passengers to view seat availability across different travel classes on a single screen. This makes it easier to compare options and choose the most suitable accommodation without switching between multiple pages.

To further simplify bookings, the checkout process has been shortened by reducing the number of steps required to complete a reservation. Users who frequently travel will also benefit from saved passenger details, enabling quicker repeat bookings.

The Ministry of Railways said the beta phase has been launched primarily to collect user feedback. Suggestions received from passengers during the trial period will help refine the platform before the full-scale rollout. Additional improvements based on user experience will also be incorporated in future updates.

The upgraded website will eventually be integrated with the Railways’ new Passenger Reservation System (PRS), which is currently undergoing a comprehensive technological upgrade. The enhanced reservation engine is being developed to support faster processing, greater scalability and uninterrupted services across multiple railway booking applications.

The ministry said the fully integrated IRCTC portal and the next-generation Passenger Reservation System are expected to be launched in the coming weeks, ushering in a new era of digital railway ticketing for millions of passengers across India.
