Tamil Nadu Electoral Roll Revision: Final Deadline for Voter Registration January 30
Chennai, Jan 2026 : The Election Commission of India (ECI) has reiterated that the extended deadline for inclusion and correction of names in Tamil Nadu’s electoral roll will end on Friday, January 30, urging all eligible voters to complete the registration process ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
As of Tuesday, January 27, the state had received a total of 16,02,555 applications for new registration or corrections. The move comes as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls, which began on November 4, 2025.
The publication of the draft electoral roll on December 19, 2025, had sparked widespread attention, as it showed that 97.38 lakh voters had been removed from the rolls. Consequently, the total voter count in the state dropped from 6,41,14,587 to 5,43,76,756.
According to Election Commission data, the deletions included 66,44,881 voters due to changes in residence, 26,94,672 due to deaths, and 3,98,278 identified as duplicate entries. In response to the large-scale removals, the ECI provided an opportunity for affected voters to request re-inclusion.
Between December 19, 2025, and January 18, 2026, citizens whose names were removed or those who attained 18 years of age during the revision period could apply for first-time registration or corrections. Additionally, the Commission issued notices to 12,43,363 voters whose entries were incomplete or lacked mandatory details, requesting them to submit affidavits with relevant documents for validation by January 18.
Voter applications required the use of Form 6 for new registrations and Form 8 for corrections, including address changes. To facilitate greater participation, the ECI organised special voter enrolment camps on consecutive weekends, covering Saturdays and Sundays across the state.
Citing public holidays and operational constraints, several political parties requested an extension, which the Commission approved, making January 30 the final deadline for submissions.
Officials confirmed that all applications received by January 30 will be scrutinised and verified, and the final electoral roll will be published on February 17, 2026.
Voters have been strongly advised to ensure their names are included and details are correct before the cutoff to avoid being disenfranchised in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
