Mizoram Sports Minister Inaugurates New NCC Group Headquarters, U-17 Girls Football Tournament

Aizawl, Jan 2026: Sports & Youth Services Minister of Mizoram, Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar, formally inaugurated the new National Cadet Corps (NCC) Group Headquarters in Aizawl and officially launched the NCC Mizoram Girls Under-17 Football Tournament at the Lammuala grounds in Aizawl. Major General Anurag Vij, Additional Director General of NCC Northeast Region, Shillong, also attended the event.

Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Hmar highlighted the importance of the new NCC Group Headquarters for the state. “Previously, NCC battalions were administered from Silchar Headquarters. With the establishment of this Group Headquarters in Aizawl under the guidance of Brigadiers, our youth can now benefit greatly from enhanced training and opportunities,” he said. He emphasized that the initiative would provide Mizo youth with national and international exposure, helping them excel in various fields.

The Minister added that the NCC plays a vital role in building discipline, confidence, and leadership skills among young people. It also fosters a sense of civic responsibility and prepares cadets to contribute meaningfully to society.

The U-17 Girls Football Tournament aims to provide a platform for aspiring female athletes in Mizoram to showcase their talent at state and national levels. Minister Hmar announced that the Mizoram government has committed to supporting NCC initiatives, including providing infrastructure and other necessary facilities. He also acknowledged the contributions of NCC alumni who have represented Mizoram at both state and national levels.

The tournament’s final saw Springfield School NCC defeating Candid English School NCC 2–0 to emerge champions, earning a prize of Rs 70,000. NCC cadets from various communities across Mizoram participated enthusiastically in the competition.

The ceremonial raising program for the NCC Group Headquarters was held at MZU Auditorium on January 29, with Governor General Dr. Vijay Kumar Singha in attendance.

The National Cadet Corps (NCC), established in 1948 under the Ministry of Defence, has the motto “Unity & Discipline.” It provides young students with opportunities to develop leadership, patriotism, and life skills. NCC units in Mizoram were established in 1964. Currently, the state has 4 battalions in Aizawl, 1 battalion in Lungleh, and 1 Mizoram Air Squadron. NCC units operate in schools and colleges across Mizoram, training both boys and girls.

NCC cadets undergo various activities such as drills, parades, hiking, trekking, map reading, sports, and adventure activities. Junior Division cadets (school students) can earn the ‘A’ certificate after two years of training, while Senior Division cadets (college students) earn ‘B’ certificates in two years and ‘C’ certificates in three years. NCC certification opens opportunities in Defence Services and Central Armed Police Forces such as CRPF, BSF, SSB, CISF, ITBP, and Assam Rifles.

The establishment of the new Group Headquarters and the launch of the U-17 Girls Football Tournament are expected to strengthen youth development, leadership training, and sports culture in Mizoram.
