PM Modi’s Sweden Visit Strengthens Strategic, Economic and Technology Ties Between India and Sweden

Gothenburg, May 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded the Sweden leg of his five-nation diplomatic tour on Sunday, with India and Sweden announcing a series of major initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in strategic affairs, technology, innovation, trade, artificial intelligence and cultural engagement.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the visit as highly successful and outlined six major outcomes achieved during Prime Minister Modi’s engagements with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and senior European leaders in Gothenburg.

The visit also saw Prime Minister Modi, Prime Minister Kristersson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen jointly address the prestigious European Round Table for Industry, where discussions focused on trade, technology, investment, innovation and resilient supply chains.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Kristersson held delegation-level bilateral talks aimed at further expanding India-Sweden cooperation across strategic and emerging sectors.

According to the MEA, the most significant development was the decision to elevate India-Sweden ties to the level of a Strategic Partnership, marking a major step forward in bilateral relations.

The new Strategic Partnership framework will be guided by a Joint Statement and a Joint Action Plan for the period 2026-2030. The partnership will focus on strengthening cooperation under four key pillars — strategic dialogue for stability and security, next-generation economic partnership, emerging technologies and trusted connectivity, and collaboration for people, sustainability and resilience.

The agreement reflects growing alignment between the two countries on issues related to economic security, innovation, sustainability and global governance.

The MEA also announced the launch of the India-Sweden Joint Innovation Partnership 2.0, aimed at significantly expanding cooperation in advanced scientific and technological fields.

As part of this initiative, the two countries will establish a virtual India-Sweden Joint Science and Technology Centre (ISJSTC). The platform will focus on strengthening collaboration in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, 6G technology, quantum computing, sustainable mining, critical minerals, space research and life sciences.

The partnership will also build on existing cooperation in renewable energy, energy storage systems, smart grid technologies, smart cities and resilient water management systems.

Another major outcome of the visit was the endorsement of the India-Sweden Technology and Artificial Intelligence Corridor (SITAC), which is expected to become a key platform for future-oriented cooperation in advanced technologies and digital transformation.

The initiative seeks to deepen collaboration between industries, startups and research institutions in both countries while promoting innovation-led partnerships in AI and next-generation technologies.

The MEA said the corridor would strengthen long-term cooperation in technology and help create new opportunities for startups and research ecosystems in both India and Sweden.

Economic cooperation also received a major push during the visit, with both countries setting an ambitious target of doubling bilateral trade and investment within the next five years.

The two sides agreed to strengthen business facilitation mechanisms and support India’s “Make in India” initiative by encouraging greater Swedish investment in manufacturing and technology sectors.

The governments also agreed to continue dialogue on intellectual property rights and create smoother pathways for business and industrial collaboration.

In another important initiative, India and Sweden announced the development of a dedicated SME and Startup Platform aimed at boosting entrepreneurship, innovation and youth employment.

The platform is expected to support startups and small and medium enterprises in both countries by improving collaboration opportunities, investment access and technological partnerships.

Officials said the initiative would help strengthen innovation ecosystems while creating more employment opportunities, especially for young entrepreneurs and skilled professionals.

Cultural and intellectual ties also featured prominently during the visit. India and Sweden agreed to institute the “Tagore-Sweden Lecture Series” under the theme “Vikas Bhi Virasat Bhi” (Development Alongside Heritage).

The initiative is intended to deepen cultural engagement and strengthen people-to-people ties between the two nations while promoting India’s intellectual and cultural heritage globally.

The lecture series will commemorate the historical and literary connections between India and Sweden, especially the influence of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Europe.
