PM Modi to Visit Norway for India-Nordic Summit, Boosting Strategic and Economic Ties

New Delhi, May 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Norway on Monday to take part in the 3rd India-Nordic Summit and hold a series of high-level bilateral engagements with Norwegian leadership, marking a significant milestone in India’s growing engagement with the Nordic region.

The visit is particularly historic as it will be Prime Minister Modi’s first trip to Norway and the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 43 years. During the visit, he is scheduled to call on King Harald V and Queen Sonja, reflecting the strong diplomatic and cultural ties between the two nations.

PM Modi will also hold bilateral talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, focusing on expanding cooperation in key areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment, climate action, and technology partnerships.

Business and Research Cooperation in Focus

As part of the visit, Prime Minister Modi will jointly address the India-Norway Business and Research Summit along with Prime Minister Støre. The engagement is expected to bring together industry leaders, innovators, and researchers from both countries to explore new opportunities for collaboration.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the visit will provide an important platform to review the progress in India-Norway relations and identify fresh avenues for strengthening cooperation. A key focus will be on expanding trade and investment flows, particularly leveraging the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement.

The MEA noted that the engagement also aims to strengthen collaboration in clean and green technologies, as well as the blue economy, which includes sustainable use of ocean resources.

Strengthening Trade and Investment Ties

Bilateral trade between India and Norway, valued at approximately USD 2.73 billion in 2024, is expected to gain further momentum through this visit. In addition, Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global (GPFG) has already invested nearly USD 28 billion in the Indian capital market, making it one of the most significant European institutional investors in India.

Officials believe the discussions will help further deepen financial cooperation and attract more Norwegian investment into India’s rapidly growing sectors.

India-Nordic Summit to Shape Future Cooperation

The 3rd India-Nordic Summit will be held in Oslo on May 19, 2026. Along with Prime Minister Modi, the summit will be attended by leaders from across the Nordic region, including the Prime Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Støre, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, Iceland’s Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir, and Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

The summit builds on previous editions held in Stockholm in 2018 and Copenhagen in 2022 and is expected to give a stronger strategic direction to India’s engagement with Nordic countries.

Key areas of focus include technology and innovation, green transition and renewable energy, sustainability, blue economy, defence cooperation, space collaboration, and Arctic research.

Deepening Strategic Partnership

The MEA stated that the visit will also enhance India’s broader trade and investment ties with Nordic nations, which collectively stood at around USD 19 billion in 2024. It is also expected to support resilient global supply chains, particularly in the post-India-EU FTA and India–EFTA TEPA framework.

Overall, the visit is seen as a major step in strengthening India’s strategic footprint in Northern Europe while advancing shared priorities in sustainable development and innovation-driven growth.
