Netanyahu and Trump Discuss Possible Renewal of Iran Conflict, Escalating Regional Tensions

Jerusalem, May 2026 : Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former US President Donald Trump reportedly discussed the possibility of resuming military action against Iran during a phone conversation, according to Israel’s state-owned Kan TV.

Citing a senior Israeli official, the broadcaster reported that the United States could potentially join Israel in carrying out coordinated strikes if hostilities with Iran were to restart. The report suggested that military coordination between Washington and Jerusalem remains active amid heightened regional tensions.

Following the reported conversation, Netanyahu convened a cabinet meeting in the evening where ministers reviewed Israel’s ongoing security situation across multiple conflict fronts, according to a government official cited by Xinhua News Agency.

Rising Rhetoric from Washington

The developments come after Trump issued a strong warning signalling the possibility of escalation in the US-Iran confrontation. In a post on his social media platform, he stated that “for Iran, the clock is ticking” and warned that Tehran must act quickly or face severe consequences.

He further escalated rhetoric by cautioning that if Iran failed to respond to US demands, it would face “a very bad time”, urging Tehran to “make a deal” to avoid further consequences.

Trump also shared an AI-generated image featuring himself alongside a US Navy admiral against a backdrop of stormy seas, accompanied by the caption: “It was calm before the storm,” adding to speculation of rising geopolitical tensions.

Fragile Ceasefire and Failed Negotiations

The current situation follows a fragile ceasefire agreement reached on April 8 between Iran, the United States, and Israel after 40 days of intense conflict that had begun with joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28.

Although the truce temporarily halted hostilities, diplomatic efforts to sustain peace have struggled. Iranian and US delegations held a round of talks in Islamabad on April 11 and 12, but the discussions failed to produce a breakthrough agreement.

In the weeks that followed, both sides reportedly exchanged multiple proposals through mediation channels involving Pakistan, aimed at defining conditions for a long-term settlement. However, no consensus has yet been reached.

Heightened Security Concerns

The renewed political signalling from both Washington and Jerusalem has raised concerns of a potential return to active conflict in the region. Analysts note that the coordination between US and Israeli leadership could significantly influence the next phase of tensions with Iran.

Meanwhile, Israeli authorities continue to monitor multiple security fronts, as regional instability remains high following months of confrontation and diplomatic deadlock.

With rhetoric intensifying and diplomatic efforts stalled, the situation remains volatile, keeping the Middle East on edge as global powers signal possible escalation rather than de-escalation.
