World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka Cruises into Australian Open Final with Straight-Sets Win Over Elina Svitolina
Melbourne, Jan 2026: World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the women’s singles final at the Australian Open after a commanding win over 12th seed Elina Svitolina at Rod Laver Arena on Thursday. Sabalenka secured a 6-2, 6-3 victory in just one hour and 16 minutes, marking her fourth consecutive Australian Open final appearance.
Sabalenka described the win as “an incredible achievement, but the job is not done yet,” adding, “I’m super happy with the win. She was a very tough opponent, playing incredible tennis all week, and I’m super happy to get through this tough match.”
The Belarusian champion revealed that she had closely watched Svitolina’s run in the AO 2026 draw, noting the Ukrainian’s impressive victories over third seed Coco Gauff and eighth seed Mirra Andreeva. “I was watching her matches; she was playing incredibly well against Mirra and Coco, and throughout the whole tournament,” Sabalenka said. She added, “I felt like I had to step up and put as much pressure on her as possible, and I’m happy that my performance was like that today. I played great tennis and I’m happy to get the win in straight sets.”
Both players entered the semifinal as formidable contenders, having won titles earlier this season — Sabalenka at the Brisbane International and Svitolina at the ASB Classic in Auckland. Impressively, both reached the semifinals without dropping a set, underscoring their dominant form.
Sabalenka’s performance in Melbourne reflects her consistent high-level play and strategic execution, as she successfully neutralized Svitolina’s aggressive style while maintaining her own attacking rhythm. With this win, Sabalenka continues her pursuit of her second Australian Open title and her 11th career Grand Slam trophy.
The world No. 1 will now face the winner of the other semifinal in Sunday’s final, aiming to maintain her unbeaten streak in this season’s major events. Sabalenka’s commanding display reaffirms her status as the player to beat in women’s tennis, combining power, precision, and tactical awareness to dominate top-ranked opponents.
