Foundation Laid for Tamil Nadu Knowledge City at India Global Education Summit

Jan 2026 : Tamil Nadu laid the foundation stone for the Tamil Nadu Knowledge City at the India Global Education Summit 2026, and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and Letters of Intent were signed with universities and educational institutions from various countries in the presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. M.K. Stalin.

The Hon’ble Chief Minister Mr. M.K. Stalin today (29.01.2026) laid the foundation stone for the Tamil Nadu Knowledge City project at the inaugural ceremony of the India Global Education Summit 2026, held at Kalaivanar Arangam, Chennai. In order to strengthen Tamil Nadu as a global hub for knowledge, innovation, and skill development, MoUs and Letters of Intent were signed with universities and educational institutions from different countries in his presence.

Through its Dravidian Model of governance, the Tamil Nadu Government has ensured equal access to opportunities for all and has implemented pioneering schemes in education, healthcare, and poverty eradication, making Tamil Nadu a manufacturing hub and the education capital of India. With economic strength comparable to the world’s top 50 economies and achieving double-digit growth of 11.19 percent, Tamil Nadu stands out as the only state in India to reach this milestone.

Tamil Nadu is one of the states with the strongest higher education infrastructure and the highest student enrollment ratio in India. The vision of the Tamil Nadu Government is not just to participate in global education, but to lead it. Therefore, for the first time in India, Tamil Nadu is organizing this India Global Education Summit in collaboration with NISAU. The summit brings together education, innovation, employment, and global collaboration on a single platform.

Foundation Stone for Tamil Nadu Knowledge City

The Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for the Tamil Nadu Knowledge City, which will be established over 872 acres in Sengathakullam, Melmaligapattu, and Inambakkam villages of Uthukottai taluk, Tiruvallur district.

The Knowledge City aims to integrate higher education, research and development, technology, and entrepreneurship to create a knowledge-based ecosystem and position Tamil Nadu as a global center of excellence. It will function as an integrated zone where educational, research, and industrial institutions coexist seamlessly. In the coming years, it is expected to nurture more than 25,000 learners in collaboration with world-class research and innovation centers.

Letters of Intent Signed

  • Melbourne University signed a Letter of Intent to establish an applied research center in quantum computing and agricultural technology with an investment of ₹35 crore over five years, creating direct and indirect employment.
  • IIT Madras signed Letters of Intent to establish advanced automotive research, electric vehicle research, and testing centers with investments up to ₹200 crore.
  • ArcZee signed a Letter of Intent to set up a research lab in carbon capture and sustainability.
  • Accusam, in partnership with TIDCO, signed a Letter of Intent for collaborative projects to develop the Knowledge City.

Memorandums of Understanding

MoUs were signed by Guidance Tamil Nadu with leading global institutions for skill development, AI, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, Health-AI, global Tamil research, procurement and supply education, Creative AI tools for students, innovation centers, and investment facilitation.

At the summit, 5 Letters of Intent and 8 MoUs were signed, involving a total investment of ₹355 crore, generating 2,255 direct jobs and 9,650 indirect jobs.

The event was attended by Ministers, Members of Parliament, senior government officials, university leaders, foreign embassy officials, and representatives from educational institutions.
