A New Chapter Added to Chhattisgarh’s Biodiversity

Rare Honey Badger Spotted in Marwahi Range

Raipur, February 2026 : A rare wildlife species, the honey badger, has been sighted in the Marwahi range of Chhattisgarh, marking an important moment for the state’s biodiversity. The honey badger is found in only a few regions of India and is considered a rare species. It is known for its extraordinary bravery, aggressive nature and exceptionally tough skin. Owing to its habit of raiding beehives and feeding on honey, it is called the honey badger.

The sighting of a pair of honey badgers (also known as ratels) in the Usad village area under the Marwahi forest division has generated excitement among local residents. The presence of this rare animal was confirmed through photographs and videos captured by villagers on their mobile phones. The appearance of the honey badger in Marwahi, a species found in limited pockets of India, reflects the region’s rich biodiversity and a strengthening ecological system.

Safe Natural Habitat for Rare Wildlife

It is noteworthy that under the guidance of Forest Minister Shri Kedar Kashyap and the leadership of Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Shri Arun Kumar Pandey, wildlife conservation initiatives and sustained efforts in the state are now yielding visible positive results. These efforts have helped ensure safe and natural habitats for rare wildlife species. The state government has prioritised wildlife conservation, biodiversity enhancement and protection of natural heritage to ensure a safe and healthy environment for future generations.

Honey Badger Pair Safely Released into the Forest

As soon as information about the honey badger sighting was received, a forest department team reached the spot immediately and took precautionary measures. The pair of honey badgers was safely guided back into the forest. No harm to humans or animals was reported during the operation. Surveillance in the area has since been strengthened.

The honey badger is known for its exceptional courage, tough skin and nocturnal habits. On this occasion, Marwahi Divisional Forest Officer Ms. Grishmi Chand appealed to villagers not to approach or disturb wildlife. She also urged people to inform the forest department immediately if any wild animal is spotted.

Despite being relatively small compared to large predators, the honey badger never retreats from a confrontation, even with animals much larger than itself. Lions, hyenas and even venomous snakes often avoid the honey badger due to its fearless attitude and remarkable survival skills.
