YSRCP Leader Ambati Rambabu Remanded to Judicial Custody in Fresh Case
Amaravati, Feb 2026 : Former Andhra Pradesh minister and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader Ambati Rambabu, who is already in judicial custody over alleged abusive remarks against Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, was on Monday remanded to judicial custody for another 14 days in a separate case. The fresh remand relates to an incident in which Rambabu is accused of threatening police officers during an unauthorised rally last year.
A Special Judicial Magistrate court in Guntur remanded Rambabu to judicial custody until February 22 in connection with a case registered in November 2025. The case pertains to allegations that Rambabu and his supporters threatened police personnel while staging a rally without prior permission. Rambabu, who is currently lodged at Rajahmundry Central Jail, was brought to Guntur under police escort and produced before the magistrate on Monday.
After hearing arguments on the custody petition, the court ordered that Rambabu be sent back to judicial custody for 14 days. According to police officials, the case dates back to November 12, 2025, when Guntur police booked Rambabu and others for unlawful assembly and for allegedly threatening police officers who were on duty.
Police stated that Rambabu and his supporters had taken out a rally without obtaining the required permission. When police personnel attempted to stop the procession, the group allegedly threatened officials and refused to disperse. Authorities said the unauthorised rally caused traffic disruptions and significant inconvenience to the public.
The case was registered at Pattabhipuram Police Station under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to assaulting or using criminal force against public servants to deter them from performing their duties, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation and unlawful assembly. Police also noted that similar cases have been registered against Rambabu in the past during protests organised by the YSR Congress Party on different issues.
Rambabu was earlier arrested on January 31 in Guntur district for allegedly making derogatory and abusive remarks against Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. His arrest followed high drama at his residence, where tensions escalated for several hours. Leaders and workers of the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) reportedly ransacked his house and vehicles in protest against his comments.
In connection with that incident, Rambabu was also accused of obstructing police personnel from discharging their duties and of being involved in a confrontation linked to the removal of a TDP banner. Police said he was booked under Sections 126(2) and 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for obstructing public servants.
Another case was registered under multiple BNS sections, including 126(2), 196(1), 352, 351(2) and 292, read with Section 3(5), in connection with alleged threats, abusive language and derogatory remarks. He was subsequently produced before a local court and remanded to judicial custody, following which he was shifted to Rajahmundry Central Jail.
