AIADMK Reconciliation Likely as Deadline Nears on 25 MLAs’ Defection Case in Tamil Nadu
Chennai, May 2026 : With the 15-day deadline for taking action on 25 AIADMK MLAs who defied the party whip and voted in favour of the TVK government during the May 13 trust vote set to expire on May 27, indications are emerging that both factions within the AIADMK may be moving towards a possible reconciliation to avoid deeper political and legal complications.
The internal crisis erupted after 25 AIADMK legislators voted against the party’s directive to oppose the TVK government in the trust vote, triggering serious concerns over anti-defection provisions and party discipline. The incident created a sharp divide within the party and raised questions about the future of the rebel MLAs.
Under the anti-defection law, lawmakers who violate a party whip can face disqualification unless their actions are formally condoned by the party leadership within 15 days. Legal experts and political observers have noted that the current timeline places significant pressure on both the leadership and the dissenting MLAs to reach a resolution before the deadline ends.
According to sources close to AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), efforts are underway to explore an amicable settlement. The likely process would involve the rebel MLAs expressing regret for their actions and seeking forgiveness from the party leadership, followed by formal communication to the Assembly Speaker requesting withdrawal of disqualification proceedings.
“A resolution is possible if the MLAs concerned approach the leadership and the party chooses to condone their action within the stipulated time frame,” a senior AIADMK functionary said, adding that internal discussions are ongoing.
Party insiders also indicated that several of the dissenting MLAs have already shown willingness to return to the main faction. With many legislators currently engaged in constituency-level meetings, further talks with the leadership are expected in the coming days.
Political observers have also pointed out a strategic dimension to the dispute. If disqualification proceedings move forward, it could reduce the effective strength of the Assembly and potentially lower the majority threshold required for the ruling TVK government to maintain its position, thereby altering the political balance.
Meanwhile, sources within the TVK noted that there is no strict timeline for the Speaker to decide on disqualification petitions, leaving room for continued legal and political negotiations.
As part of possible reconciliation efforts, discussions have reportedly included restoring district secretaries who were earlier removed from their posts and withdrawing pending petitions filed before the Speaker and the Election Commission.
Adding to speculation of a thaw, senior AIADMK leader S.P. Velumani recently stated that there was no internal conflict in the party and reaffirmed that Edappadi K. Palaniswami continues to be the General Secretary. He also reiterated the demand for an early general council meeting, signalling attempts to restore organisational unity amid the ongoing crisis.
