Artists from Russia inspired by Ayodhya Deepotsav under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath
Event expected to add new momentum to India–Russia cultural ties
Lucknow, Feb 2026 : The spiritual and cultural splendour associated with the Ram Temple and the grand celebrations in Ayodhya under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath has now crossed seven seas. Inspired by the Deepotsav celebrations and the broader cultural renaissance in Ayodhya, a majestic Ramleela will be staged in Moscow on February 20, marking a new chapter in India–Russia cultural relations.
The Ramleela, conceived on the lines of Ayodhya’s world-famous Deepotsav, is being organised with the support of the Embassy of India in Russia and the Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Centre. Notably, Russian artists will portray key characters from the Ramayana, presenting a vivid and heartfelt depiction of Indian spiritual traditions. Evgeny will play the role of Lord Ram, Daria will portray Sita, Murat will be seen as Lakshman, and Dmitry will take on the role of Hanuman.
Growing curiosity among Russian audiences
The event is being spearheaded by the Russia–India Friendship Society Disha, led by Dr Rameshwar Singh. The organisation has long been working to build cultural bridges between the two nations through theatre, festivals and educational initiatives. According to Singh, Ramleela is not merely a religious performance but a universal narrative of truth, duty and ideal living. This universal appeal has generated strong curiosity and enthusiasm among Russian audiences as well.
Inspiration from Ayodhya’s Deepotsav
Since Yogi Adityanath assumed office as Chief Minister, Ayodhya’s Deepotsav has gained global recognition. Images of the holy city illuminated by millions of lamps have left a deep impression on cultural organisations and artists worldwide. The Uttar Pradesh government had earlier provided a platform to Russian artists during the Ayodhya Deepotsav, where they presented Ramleela and earned wide appreciation.
Deeply moved by Ayodhya’s spiritual aura and the grandeur of its celebrations, the visiting Russian artists and organisers resolved to recreate a similar emotional and cultural experience in Moscow. The upcoming Ramleela is a direct outcome of that inspiration.
Emotional connect between India and Russia
The tradition of Ramleela has historically played a role in strengthening India–Russia cultural ties. In the 1960s, renowned Soviet actor Padma Shri Gennadi Mikhailovich Pechnikov staged Ramleela performances in Moscow, forging a strong emotional bond between the peoples of the two countries. The February 20 performance is seen as a continuation of that legacy.
Ayodhya’s inspiration reaches Moscow
Dr Rameshwar Singh noted that the event is being organised with special cooperation from India’s Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar. He said the cultural revival initiated in Ayodhya through Deepotsav and related initiatives is now creating a global impact, with the Moscow Ramleela standing as a prominent example.
February 20: A night of devotion and culture
Elaborate stage design, traditional costumes and carefully curated music are being prepared for the Moscow Ramleela. A large gathering of Russian citizens, members of the Indian diaspora and cultural dignitaries is expected. As the life of Lord Ram unfolds on stage, the atmosphere is set to resonate with the values of devotion, dignity and righteousness that define Indian culture. Through theatre, celebration and shared heritage, the event promises to emerge as a powerful symbol of unity and cultural harmony between India and Russia.
