Sweden and India:
In recent years, Sweden and India have signed a number of bilateral cooperation agreements in areas such as innovation, research and energy. Today, Sweden and India have a broad trade exchange and nearly 300 Swedish companies are established in the country. In January 2026, the EU and India agreed on a historic free trade agreement after almost 20 years of negotiations. The agreement means that customs duties on EU exports of goods will be reduced by over 90%. For Sweden, the agreement means significant opportunities. There is much to suggest that exports could double by 2030, with increased opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises.
Bilateral relations between India and Sweden have been extensive since India’s independence in 1947. Diplomatic relations were established in 1948 and India became one of the first recipients of Swedish aid in 1953. Swedish aid to India has been phased out since 2013. Today, Sweden has a broad trade exchange and growing research and innovation cooperation with India. In 2023, Sweden and India celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations.
In recent years, an intensive exchange of visits has taken place in both directions:
- In 2018, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Sweden for talks with Prime Minister Löfven. In connection with this, a joint action plan for bilateral cooperation – Joint Action Plan, and a bilateral innovation partnership were signed.
- In 2019, a state visit from Sweden to India was carried out, in which several ministers and a large business delegation participated.
- In 2023, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson met Prime Minister Modi in connection with COP28 in Dubai, where the leaders together launched a new phase of the multilateral initiative, the Leadership Group for Industrial Transition, LeadIt.
In recent years, Sweden and India have signed a number of bilateral cooperation agreements in areas such as innovation, technical and scientific cooperation, defence, health, environment, renewable energy and sustainable urban development.
The presence of Swedish companies in the country goes back a long way, and the first Swedish corporate investment was made as early as the 1920s. India’s strong economic growth and large domestic market make the country an increasingly important trading partner for Swedish companies. Trade between Sweden and India has increased significantly in recent years, and a growing number of Swedish companies have established themselves in India. In 2024, the number of companies was approximately 280, which together directly employ approximately 220,000 people in India. More and more Indian companies are also making investments in Sweden, especially in the IT sector.
The strong interest from the business community in the Indian market led to the formation of the Sweden-India Business Council (SIBC) in Sweden in 2003. In 2007, a Swedish Chamber of Commerce in India was formed. In 2012, a new Consulate General was opened in Mumbai, focused on trade promotion. Business Sweden has offices in New Delhi and Bangalore and is also opening an office in Mumbai. In 2016, a joint business council between Sweden and India, the India-Sweden Business Leaders Round Table, was launched.
