Tourism Expert Ms. Kirsi Joins Rural Women in Mahua Collection, Impressed by Bastar’s Biodiversity and Folk Culture
UN-associated international expert engages in dialogue on rural tourism, bamboo craft and tribal dance during Bastar visit; emphasizes giving Bastar tourism global recognition
Raipur, February 2026 : Bastar’s rich biodiversity, vibrant folk culture and the warmth of rural life have once again resonated at the international level. During her visit to Bastar, Ms. Kirsi, an international tourism expert associated with the United Nations and founder of “Hiwa Coaching and Consulting,” closely experienced the rural environment and actively participated in mahua collection alongside local women.
On the third day of her visit, she began with a “Nature and Environment Observation Walk” and bird-watching amid scenic natural surroundings. Walking along forest trails with local guides, she gained insights into Bastar’s biodiversity, forest resources and ecological systems. While collecting mahua with rural women, she appeared particularly enthusiastic and described the activity as a strong example of a self-reliant rural economy.
In the afternoon, Bastar’s cultural heritage came alive when a Dhurwa tribal dance troupe presented captivating performances of traditional Mandari, Dandari and Gurgal dances. The folk dances, performed in traditional attire to the rhythm of indigenous musical instruments, left the foreign guest spellbound. Officials from the tourism board also provided her with detailed information on the historical, social and cultural significance of these dances. This was followed by an important interaction with tourism vendors, local stakeholders and district administration officials, during which technical discussions were held on the potential of rural tourism in Bastar, product refinement, marketing strategies and development aligned with international standards.
In the Dhurmaras area, during a “technical interaction” session with local bamboo artisans and craftsmen, Ms. Kirsi learned about the intricacies of Bastar’s renowned bamboo handicrafts and offered suggestions to enhance product quality and expand access to global markets. Through a “culture walk,” she experienced various dimensions of rural life and appreciated the warmth of local hospitality. The day concluded with a debriefing session at the Dhurwa Dera homestay, where the day’s activities were reviewed. The visit, organized in the presence of district administration and Chhattisgarh Tourism Board officials, aims to firmly establish Bastar’s rural tourism on the international map.
Sharing her experience, the expert said that Bastar presents a remarkable blend of nature, culture and community participation. If showcased on the global stage in a well-planned manner, the region can emerge as an attractive international tourism destination. The visit not only facilitated cultural exchange but also infused new confidence and energy among rural women, artisans and the local community.
