Vijay Announces Welfare Schemes for Women, Students and Senior Citizens at Women’s Day Event
Mamallapuram, March 2026 : Actor-turned-politician and president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay, on Saturday unveiled a series of welfare promises aimed at improving the lives of women, children and senior citizens in Tamil Nadu.
Addressing a large gathering during a Women’s Day celebration organised by his party in Mamallapuram, Vijay outlined several proposals that he said would be implemented if TVK comes to power in the state. The actor-turned-politician emphasised that women’s empowerment, safety and economic stability would be among the top priorities of his party.
Speaking at the event, Vijay said the development and protection of women must form the foundation of social progress. He added that his party’s policies are designed to ensure dignity, security and equal opportunities for women across the state.
As part of the proposed initiatives, Vijay announced the creation of a separate government department dedicated to the welfare of women, children and senior citizens. According to him, the department would function under his direct supervision to ensure effective monitoring of welfare schemes and their transparent implementation.
The proposed department would focus on strengthening social security measures, supporting families and ensuring that government assistance reaches the intended beneficiaries without delays or bureaucratic obstacles.
In one of the major financial support proposals, Vijay promised that all women aged 60 years and above would receive a monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500. However, he clarified that women employed in government service would not be eligible for the scheme.
The TVK leader also announced the “Annapoorna Super Six” programme aimed at reducing the financial burden on households. Under this initiative, each family in the state would receive six free LPG cylinders every year.
Vijay said the scheme would significantly benefit women, who traditionally manage household kitchens, and help families cope with rising living costs.
In addition to household support measures, Vijay also proposed an educational assistance programme for school children. Under this initiative, mothers or guardians of students studying from Class 1 to Class 12 would receive an annual scholarship of Rs 15,000.
The financial assistance, he said, is intended to encourage continuous schooling and prevent students from dropping out due to financial constraints. Vijay stressed that investing in education is essential for building a stronger and more prosperous society.
Addressing women’s mobility and safety, Vijay announced the “Vetri Yatra” scheme, under which women would be allowed to travel free of cost on all government buses across Tamil Nadu.
He said the initiative would improve women’s access to education, employment opportunities and public services while also reducing daily transportation expenses.
To further strengthen women’s safety, Vijay proposed the creation of a special security force called the “Rani Velu Nachiyar Sena,” named after the historic queen Rani Velu Nachiyar, who is remembered for her resistance against colonial rule.
According to Vijay, around 500 teams of this special force would be formed across the state to monitor public spaces and respond to safety concerns involving women.
The TVK president also emphasised economic empowerment for women through entrepreneurship. He announced that women’s self-help groups would be provided loans of up to Rs 5 lakh with 100 per cent subsidy to help them start or expand small businesses.
He said the initiative would promote financial independence among women and encourage them to participate actively in the state’s economy.
In another welfare measure, Vijay announced the “Thai Maman Gold Ring Scheme,” under which newborn children in Tamil Nadu would receive gold rings. The programme, he said, symbolises the government’s support for families and aims to promote the well-being of infants.
Concluding his address, Vijay said the proposed schemes reflect TVK’s vision of creating a society where women feel safe, respected and economically empowered. He added that the party is committed to building a future where every woman has equal opportunities and the support needed to lead a secure and dignified life.
