India Finish Runners-Up as England Win FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup Qualifier Final
Hyderabad, March 2026 : The India women’s national field hockey team finished as runners-up in the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup Qualifiers after suffering a 0-2 defeat against England women’s national field hockey team in the final at the G. M. C. Balayogi Hockey Stadium on Saturday. England’s Grace Balsdon and Elizabeth Neal scored the goals that secured the title for the visitors.
India started the match with energy and confidence, putting early pressure on England’s defence. Within the first two minutes, forward Navneet Kaur helped India earn a penalty corner, raising hopes among the home crowd. However, her drag flick from the set-piece was well saved by the England goalkeeper, denying India an early lead.

Despite missing that opportunity, India maintained a disciplined structure, defending well while attempting to push forward with attacking moves. The hosts showed determination in the opening minutes, but England gradually began to find their rhythm as the first quarter progressed.
With just two minutes remaining in the first quarter, England earned a crucial penalty corner. Grace Balsdon made the most of the chance, executing a powerful drag flick that beat the Indian defence and found the back of the net in the 13th minute. The goal gave England a 1-0 advantage and marked Balsdon’s fifth penalty-corner goal in the tournament.
The second quarter followed a similar pattern, with both teams playing cautiously and not giving away too many chances. India continued to probe the English defence and managed several circle penetrations during the first half. However, despite these attacking moves, they struggled to create clear scoring opportunities and failed to seriously test the England goalkeeper. As a result, England carried their one-goal lead into half-time.
After the break, England looked more comfortable controlling the pace of the game. They focused on maintaining possession and patiently building their attacks, which limited India’s chances to launch counterattacks. Although India tried to apply pressure whenever they gained possession, the England defence remained solid.
England eventually doubled their lead in the third quarter. In the 43rd minute, midfielder Elizabeth Neal took a shot that deflected off an Indian defender and slipped past goalkeeper Bichu Devi Kharibam, making it 2-0 for England. The deflection proved unfortunate for India but gave England a comfortable advantage heading into the final quarter.
India continued to fight and pushed forward in search of a goal that could bring them back into the contest. The hosts tried to create openings with quick passes and attacking runs, while England remained composed and continued playing an attacking style to avoid giving India momentum.
In the closing minutes, India earned another penalty corner, offering a final chance to reduce the deficit. However, the opportunity went unconverted, and England held firm until the final whistle.
Despite the defeat, India’s strong performance throughout the tournament ensured a second-place finish, while England celebrated a well-deserved victory and the qualifier title.
