‘Sinners’ Dominates 98th Academy Awards as Michael B. Jordan Wins Best Actor, Major Honors Across Key Categories

Los Angeles, March 2026 : The 98th edition of the Academy Awards is underway at the Dolby Theatre, with director Ryan Coogler’s period drama Sinners emerging as one of the biggest highlights of the night. The film led this year’s awards race with 16 nominations and secured major victories across multiple categories, including Best Actor and Best Original Score.

One of the most significant wins of the evening came for Michael B. Jordan, who received the Oscar for Best Actor for his powerful performance in Sinners. The award marked the first Academy Award of Jordan’s career and a major milestone after years of critically acclaimed performances in both independent films and blockbuster productions.

In Sinners, Jordan plays a complex protagonist struggling with moral dilemmas, personal redemption, and the burden of a troubled past. Critics praised the performance for its emotional intensity and psychological depth, noting that Jordan carried much of the film’s dramatic narrative with a commanding screen presence. The demanding role required both emotional nuance and physical intensity, which many reviewers described as one of the finest performances of the year.

Jordan first gained widespread recognition through the television series Friday Night Lights before transitioning successfully to film. Over the years, he has delivered memorable performances in films such as Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther, establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s most influential actors of his generation.

Set in the early 20th century American South, Sinners follows two brothers returning to their hometown while confronting a violent past shaped by crime, racial tensions, and survival. The film blends historical context with themes of loyalty, identity, and redemption. The ensemble cast includes Hailee Steinfeld and Delroy Lindo.

Another major win for the film came when composer Ludwig Göransson secured the Academy Award for Best Original Score for his work on Sinners. This marked Göransson’s third Oscar after previous wins for Black Panther and Oppenheimer.

For Sinners, Göransson created a score that blends orchestral arrangements with modern production techniques, producing an atmospheric soundtrack that complements the film’s tense and emotional narrative. Critics noted that the layered instrumentation and rhythmic motifs played a crucial role in shaping the pacing and dramatic intensity of several key scenes. He edged out fellow nominees such as Alexandre Desplat, Jerskin Fendrix, Jonny Greenwood and Max Richter.

In the acting categories, veteran performer Amy Madigan won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Weapons. The award marked the first Academy Award of her career, several decades after her earlier nomination for Twice in a Lifetime. Her restrained yet emotionally powerful performance in Weapons was widely praised by critics and audiences.

Madigan has built a long and respected career across film, television and theatre, appearing in well-known productions such as Field of Dreams and Uncle Buck. Her Oscar win was widely viewed as recognition of her decades-long contribution to the entertainment industry.

Meanwhile, Sean Penn took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the political thriller One Battle After Another. Penn portrayed Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw, a complex and controversial character whose ideological conflicts drive the film’s narrative.

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the film follows a group of radical activists navigating ideological tensions, state surveillance and internal divisions within their movement. The cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio and Regina Hall.

Penn’s victory marked the third Academy Award of his career, following his earlier Best Actor wins for Mystic River and Milk. Notably, the actor did not attend the ceremony, and the award was accepted on his behalf by Kieran Culkin, who humorously acknowledged Penn’s absence.

The ceremony is being hosted by late-night television personality Conan O’Brien, who also hosted the 2025 event. Adding to the star-studded lineup, Indian actor-producer Priyanka Chopra appeared as one of the presenters during the evening.

With multiple wins and widespread acclaim, Sinners has emerged as one of the defining films of this year’s Oscars, cementing its place as a standout production in contemporary Hollywood cinema.
