Vijay Rules Out NDA Tie-Up, TVK to Contest Tamil Nadu Polls Solo
Chennai, March 2026: Actor-turned-politician Vijay has put an end to speculation about a possible alliance with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), declaring that his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), will contest the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections independently.
The announcement is expected to significantly alter the political dynamics in Tamil Nadu, setting the stage for a four-cornered electoral battle.
Addressing a meeting of party leaders in Pattinapakkam, Vijay made it clear that TVK has not engaged in alliance talks with any political party. He urged party workers to intensify grassroots efforts and prepare for the elections with full force.
“We are going to contest elections alone. Go to the constituencies and strengthen field work. The candidate list will be announced soon. I will also tour across Tamil Nadu. We will definitely win,” he said, expressing confidence ahead of TVK’s first major electoral test.
Vijay’s statement comes amid reports that discussions between TVK and the NDA were at an advanced stage. Political observers believe there were attempts to transform the electoral contest into a triangular fight by bringing TVK into the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-BJP alliance. However, differences over leadership roles and ideological positioning appear to have stalled the negotiations.
According to sources, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had reportedly offered TVK around 60 seats along with the Deputy Chief Minister’s post. In return, TVK is believed to have proposed a power-sharing arrangement, with Vijay seeking the Chief Minister’s position for part of the term. This proposal was reportedly rejected by AIADMK leadership, including Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
With TVK choosing to go solo, the Tamil Nadu elections are now likely to witness four major contenders: the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance, the AIADMK-BJP combine, TVK, and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) led by Seeman, which is also contesting independently.
Meanwhile, TVK has begun finalising its candidates, with selections reportedly completed for around 60 constituencies. The party is expected to release its full list of candidates and manifesto soon as it prepares for an aggressive statewide campaign.
Vijay himself is likely to contest from Perambur, while key leaders such as Aadhav Arjuna (Villivakkam) and Anand (T Nagar) are expected to be fielded. Other potential candidates, including Rajmohan Arumugam, Arul Prakasam, and P. Venkataraman, are also under consideration.
The decision marks a bold political move by Vijay, positioning TVK as an independent force aiming to make a significant impact in Tamil Nadu’s electoral landscape.
