Fishing Competition Held at Tlawng Sihhmui Kai
Aizawl, March 2026: A two-day fishing competition was organised at Tlawng Sihhmui Kai from March 20 to 21, 2026. The event was jointly organized by the Fisheries Department (Sihhmui Branch), the Young Mizo Association (YMA), and the Mizoram Angling Association. This marked the second edition of the competition. Although the catch was not as high as expected due to unfavorable weather conditions, participants managed to catch more fish compared to the previous year.

The biggest fish of the competition, weighing 6.825 kg, was caught by Malsawmtluanga from Salem Veng. R. Lalrinsanga from Tuithiang Veng recorded the highest number of catches, with a total of eight fish.
The closing function was held on March 21, 2026, under the chairmanship of Er. Lalrothanga, Secretary of the Fisheries Department. In his address, he emphasized the importance of conserving fish and aquatic life. He highlighted that along with protecting aquatic species, it is equally important to keep rivers clean and free from pollution. He urged people to ensure that waste materials do not enter rivers and appealed for collective responsibility in maintaining water bodies.
The programme was chaired by Pi Zonuntluangi, Director of the Fisheries Department, who spoke about the harmful effects of illegal fishing practices and the penalties associated with them. The Secretary of the Sihhmui Branch YMA presented a report, while the President of the Mizoram Angling Association also addressed the gathering.
Winners were awarded with mementos and cash prizes in various categories:
- Largest Fish (1st): Malsawmtluanga, Salem Veng
- Largest Fish (2nd): R. Lalrinsanga, Tuithiang Veng
- Largest Fish (3rd): Benjamin Vanlalpeka, Luangmual
- Highest Number of Fish: R. Lalrinsanga, Tuithiang Veng
- Best Female Angler: Jenny Zorinmawii, Dawrpui Vengthar
- Youngest Angler: Isaac Vanlalhriatkima, Tuithiang Veng
- Oldest Angler: Vanlalthanga, Sihhmui
The Fisheries Department also cautioned that illegal fishing methods such as using explosives, chemicals, or electric devices are punishable by fines and imprisonment. It appealed to the public to actively participate in protecting aquatic ecosystems and preserving river biodiversity.
