‘Nothing New in PM’s Statement’: Priyanka Gandhi Seeks Full Debate on West Asia Crisis
New Delhi, March 2026 : Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address in the Lok Sabha on the West Asia conflict offered “nothing new” and reiterated her party’s demand for a detailed discussion on the issue in Parliament.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament after the Prime Minister’s statement, Priyanka Gandhi said the opposition had already submitted a notice seeking a full-fledged debate. “He has briefed the House today, but there is nothing new in what he said. We believe a discussion is important so that all sides can present their views,” she said.
During his address, PM Modi outlined the government’s efforts to ensure uninterrupted energy supplies amid rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia. He highlighted that India has significantly diversified its energy sources over the years to reduce dependency on any single region.
According to the Prime Minister, India earlier imported crude oil, LNG, and LPG from 27 countries, but that number has now increased to 41, strengthening the country’s energy security. He also noted that India currently imports around 60 per cent of its LPG requirements, making supply stability a key concern during global disruptions.
“In view of uncertainties, we have prioritised domestic LPG consumers,” Modi said, adding that the government is also working to boost domestic LPG production. He assured that continuous efforts are being made to maintain smooth availability of petrol and diesel across the country.
The Prime Minister also reiterated India’s firm stand on diplomacy and peace, condemning attacks on civilian infrastructure, energy facilities, and transport networks in the conflict-hit region. He expressed concern over disruptions to global trade routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, and termed attacks on commercial vessels as unacceptable.
“Through diplomatic channels, India is making constant efforts to ensure the safe passage of Indian ships even in this challenging environment,” he said.
Modi emphasised that India has consistently raised its voice in favour of peace and humanitarian values. “Dialogue and diplomacy are the only solutions to this conflict. Our efforts are focused on reducing tensions and bringing an early end to the crisis,” he added.
He further stressed that threats to human life in any conflict are against the interests of humanity and called upon all parties involved to work towards a peaceful resolution at the earliest.
The issue is expected to remain a key point of contention in Parliament, with the opposition pressing for a broader debate.
