FIFA World Cup 2026: Spain Beat Austria 3-0 to Reach Round of 16; Oyarzabal Nets Brace
Score: Spain 3-0 Austria
Los Angeles, July 2026 : Spain produced a dominant display to cruise into the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026, defeating Austria 3-0 at Los Angeles on Thursday. A brilliant brace from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro’s maiden international goal sealed a comprehensive victory as the European champions continued their impressive campaign.
The win marked Spain’s first knockout-stage victory at a FIFA World Cup since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010. They will now face the winners of the Portugal vs Croatia clash in the Round of 16 in Dallas on July 7.
Spain stamped their authority on the contest from the opening whistle. Young sensation Lamine Yamal tested the Austrian defence with an effort inside the opening minute, setting the tone for a match in which La Roja dominated possession and created the bulk of the chances.
Marc Cucurella appeared to have given Spain an early lead when he bundled home from a corner, but the effort was ruled out after the referee judged that Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager had been fouled during the play.
Spain, however, maintained relentless pressure and finally found the breakthrough in the 36th minute. Cucurella delivered a precise low cross from the left flank, and Mikel Oyarzabal met it with a composed first-time finish that nestled into the bottom corner. The goal was Oyarzabal’s third of the tournament and gave Spain a deserved lead heading into half-time.
Luis de la Fuente’s side nearly doubled the advantage before the break. Alex Baena struck the crossbar with a well-hit free-kick, while Yamal forced another impressive save from Schlager as Austria struggled to contain Spain’s fluid attacking movement.
Austria rarely threatened in the opening period. Their best opportunity came when Michael Gregoritsch failed to connect with a dangerous cross from Marcel Sabitzer. After the interval, substitute Sasa Kalajdzic also squandered a promising chance, heading another Sabitzer delivery over the crossbar shortly after entering the field.
Spain quickly punished Austria’s missed opportunities.
In the 68th minute, Baena floated in an inviting cross from the left, and right-back Pedro Porro timed his run perfectly to power home a header for his first-ever international goal, doubling Spain’s advantage and effectively ending Austria’s hopes of a comeback.
Even after extending their lead, Spain continued to attack with confidence. Yamal came close to adding his name to the scoresheet, but veteran defender David Alaba produced a remarkable goal-line clearance to deny the teenage winger.
Spain finally added a third goal late in the match to cap an outstanding team performance. Once again, Cucurella turned provider with another accurate delivery from the left, allowing Oyarzabal to slide in and complete his brace, sealing a convincing 3-0 victory.
While Spain’s attack grabbed the headlines, goalkeeper Unai Simón also created history with another assured performance.
The clean sheet was Simón’s fifth consecutive shutout in FIFA World Cup matches, dating back to Spain’s goalless draw against Morocco at the 2022 World Cup before their penalty shootout exit. The achievement equals the record set by Italian goalkeeper Walter Zenga during the 1990 World Cup.
Simón also surpassed Zenga’s long-standing record for the longest run without conceding a goal in World Cup history. Having now gone 519 minutes without allowing an opponent to score, the Spanish goalkeeper eclipsed Zenga’s previous mark of 517 minutes, underlining Spain’s defensive solidity alongside their attacking brilliance.
With confidence growing and key players hitting top form, Spain head into the Round of 16 looking every bit like genuine contenders to add a second World Cup title to their name.
