“The passport is not just a travel document; it’s incredibly valuable in terms of what it represents,” Rubio said. “For many Americans, presenting a US passport while travelling abroad is a tremendous source of pride.”

He said the special edition pays tribute to “the 250th anniversary of the founding of the single greatest nation in all of human history.”

According to Rubio, the commemorative passport marks the beginning of a wider transformation of the US passport programme, aimed at enhancing both the user experience and the document’s presentation.

For the first time, newly issued passports will be delivered in an elegant presentation box accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, replacing the traditional plain mailing package.

“We felt that something as important and dignified as the American passport deserved a presentation worthy of its significance,” Rubio said.

Alongside the commemorative edition, the State Department is preparing to roll out a largely digital passport application system that will allow Americans to complete nearly the entire application process online.

Under the proposed system, applicants will be able to upload documents electronically, take their passport photographs using a computer or smartphone camera, and complete facial identity verification through secure government technology.

Rubio said the new process is designed to significantly reduce waiting times and eliminate many of the inconveniences associated with traditional passport applications.

“You’ll be able to go online and complete almost the entire process digitally,” he said. “Applicants will no longer need to visit photo centres, and it should greatly reduce long queues, appointment delays and processing bottlenecks.”

The State Department expects these digital upgrades to be introduced over the coming months as part of its ongoing modernisation efforts.

Future editions of US passports are also expected to incorporate interactive features, including QR codes that will link users to short educational videos highlighting important moments in American history depicted throughout the passport.

“When users scan the QR code, they’ll be directed to a brief video presentation explaining that particular moment in American history,” Rubio said. “We believe this will become another source of pride and help people connect more deeply with our nation’s heritage.”

Rubio revealed that he had personally presented the first commemorative passport to President Donald Trump earlier in the day.

“I gave it to the President this morning, and he absolutely loved it,” Rubio said. According to the Secretary of State, Trump asked to keep the passport for a few days so he could show it to visitors meeting him at the White House.

The US State Department said the commemorative passport reflects the country’s shared history while looking toward its future. It noted that the document honours America’s enduring values of liberty, democracy, self-government and national unity, while continuing to incorporate the sophisticated security technologies that have made the US passport one of the world’s most secure travel and identity documents.
